Re: Reece in England Squad v France : Mon Oct 25, 2021 7:07 am
Mixed bag for Reece. Great break and pass to create the third?? Try.

Was lucky not to get ten for the tackle.

Probably had better option on the bombed try although his winger should still have taken it.

I give him a 7/10.

What it does show is that if Reece is is one of SL best centres and I think he is, then we are some way behind the Aussies in that department.

That’s no slur on Reece or any of the English players but the Aussies are better across the park and especially strong in the centres. In fairness this has been a weak position for England for years.

Still Reece should have come out of this stronger which is good for us and for him..

Note: I do feel for Lyne, coming from an unfashionable club he will always be looked at unfavourably by the snobs in the game. Hence to keep his spot he has to be that much better. I hope Wane doesn’t see it that way, he must not you’d assume or he wouldn’t have selected him so hope he’s done enough.

Reece had a fair game and he just seems to be Wane's type of player. I hope he sticks with him because I'd like to see him tested against the Aussies but who knows when others such as Newman are knocking on the door.
I don't know where that tackle came from - just not a Reece Lyne tackle, but I agree he was very lucky not to have got 10 for that.

It was a 'look at me coach' tackle that went wrong, I don't think it was malicious which is why he stayed on, the French ref was excellent in that respect.

Re: Reece in England Squad v France : Mon Nov 01, 2021 11:51 pm
I’m a big fan of Lynne always have been even in the early days when the boo boys were on his back.

I think he is a moneyball centre.

From a stats point of view he is excellent and brings great value, for the players that were fit and available I think he deserved his shirt.

I don’t anticipate he did enough to get a spot in the 17 going forward when the NRL lads come into contention. He’s not alone in that, I think a lot of the players who you would have thought should have been really going for it to push themselves into contention were poor.

I think the squad will look very different and with the competition at centre if they all remain fit he may be a casualty of that.

1 thing I find really frustrating is the unforced errors when he has too much time. It’s something that has blighted his game over the years. He seems to overthink things when he has too much time. Happens for Trinity and was highlighted in that game again with the break and pass that should have been a try.

I don’t think there was any malice in the tackle he just got his technique wrong but in SL he would have seen yellow (not saying that is a good or bad thing).

I’d have given him 5 out of 10 for his performance, but the most I would have given anyone for England was 6 out of 10. I thought McShane killed our momentum around the ruck with slow ball and poor delivery which again will not have helped the outside backs.

With Newman, Gildart back for next year and injury free, the likes of Farnworth and Percival and I think a potential bolter in Jake Waddell there is plenty of competition for him to fend off.

One thing I noted was Wane likening to Mal Meninga in his post game interview which is quite some accolade so he clearly rates him.

I agree with all that.
The only think that could put him above the others in Wane's eyes is that he doesn't get out muscled.

Often goes unmentioned but his defence is excellent, much. better the Bill IMHO. He's a limpet tackler, doesn't always bring them down himself but hangs on long enough for reinforcements to arrive, big or small he'll take them on.

That is a little bit of a concern to me. You are correct he very much does have that type of style and it is very effective in SL.

Looking at the Aussies though he is more than likely going to be up against in the centres one of Latrell Mitchell or Tom Trbojevic. Mitchell tops the scales at over 17 stone and is a freak of an athlete and Tribojevic is 16 stone plus and glides across the field like he’s 11 stone wet through and is deceptively powerful.

Both are significant levels above anything we have to offer or come up against week in week out in SL.

Going high on these lads is a recipe for disaster as they have the strength to brush of defenders with ease. The way the dominated in Origin was terrifying.

It’s obviously not the only area on the field we will be outgunned but I think who need a strong 1 on 1 tackler in the centres who can nullify, or at least try to nullify, these threats.

The defensive style Reece has with that spider like grasp has seen many of their NRL opponents simply brushed off. That isn’t the only area we have to worry about but it’s certainly a big one. To be honest trying to compete with them next year is a bit of a thankless task but who knows.

1 thing I will say is I don’t think they have the strength in depth in the centres they have had in the past which is why 2 traditional fullbacks will probably be running in the centres, that being said both could pretty much play anywhere in the backline and be the best 2 players in the world in that position.

I think with Fittler bobbing Trobjevic and Mitchell at centre for NSW, Tommy basically had a free reign to do what he wanted. He linked a lot with Mitchell on his half of the field, similar to what Meninga and Miles did in the 80’s when joined centres and halves were common. You’ve literally got 3 of the best players in the world in Mitchell, Trebjevic and Tedesco 1-3. Like you said, it’s a very difficult task trying to get anywhere near these guys, not to mention New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji or Samoa. See what happens.

Can’t discount PNG either with their influx of NRL players.

It’s going to be a very tough tournament.

I think the clear favourites are the Aussie, followed by NZ then Tonga, England, Fiji, Samoa and PNG not much between them.

The inclusion of our NRL players will hopefully move us out of that pack though and at least be good enough to get us to a semifinal.

As I’m laid up following an op I’ve got too much time on my hands and just been thinking about my England team we’re we to pick it tomorrow.

1. Tomkins
2. Mackinson
3. Percival
4. Farnworth
5. Davies or TJ if only we can keep him fit!
6. Williams
7. Lomax
8. Thompson
9. Clarke/Hodgson rotation
10. Walmsley
11. McMeekin but I think Bateman will get the nod
12. Whitehead
13. Sutton

At the moment that’s about as strong as it gets in my opinion with some good strength off the bench/squad particularly in the forwards.
