The prop debate is an interesting one!
I go back to when Chris Chester first took over..we initially did pretty well then Hull came to Belle Vue with their big strong pack and absolutely steamrolled us and CC went on record saying we were bullied in the forwards.
Slowly and gradually he built a formidable pack (in size)…the likes of Fifita, Pauli, Huby, England, Hirst…we had some good times and the ‘bullying’ of our pack suddenly stopped.
Then….all through the covid times and the rule changes which sped the game up it all of a sudden looked like going with such a big pack wasn’t the best of ideas and teams were looking more at more mobile props able to play more minutes….this is the road we went down.
I still don’t think our pack is the worst…when all are fully fit and firing we’re capable of matching the best and that’s built on quick play the balls and plenty of offloads. Against Cas we did neither of those from minute 1 to 80!
Having a big pack doesn’t automatically make you a better team…I look at Hull and some of the big men they have earning big money and they’re still inconsistent and under performing in my eyes.
The sooner Fifita is back in the better though as he’s not just a very good prop, he seems to lift the others to a higher level too. What’s his issue anyway? In the squad 3 consecutive games…led to believe he’s touch and go…chip shop rumours of him definitely playing then not even in the squad for today?
