You are missing the point on this.

The referee signaled a knock on and gave a scrum. Nothing to do with stepping off the mark.

You could easily have had 3 different players in the bin because of holding down when we got a break away. The penalty didn't help because you could regroup and get back on side.

Likewise, had it not been such a skinny 10, Connor, Tuimevave and Naulago would have had a field day.

Why did the ref say a scrum to Hull when he had waved play on and 5 passes later a Hull player dropped the ball and the Wakey player looked to be going in to the clear,though the advantage rule had gone.

The ball had originally been tipped by a wakey player. It was a free play. The ref had wiped the tackle count clean to Hull were playing hot potato with it. The final knock on by Hull was irrelevant as it went back to the first offence.

I thought free play was not relevant this season? Advantage maybe but not free play.

Fair play, I'd missed that.

This is what I have dug up on the rule changes

Meanwhile, the removal of the ‘free play’ comes after the overuse of the kick ahead into no man’s land and the subsequent breaks in play which have come about on the back of the rule coming in. Referees will instead have back the discretion to decide when a team’s advantage period is over.

This suggest to me that providing you dont kick the ball on what used to be a free play or you make minimal yards, the ref could still award you the advantage.
