A bit off topic, but just to show how very lax our beloved council Planning Dept are at enforcing their own planning laws that some years ago they ordered the owners of the Grade11 "listed" Wakefield Arms public house adjacent Kirkgate railway station to improve the state of the building. It is now April 2017 and absolutely nothing has been done. What a welcoming site it is to visitors to the city. If I'm not mistaken ythe same applied to the Regal cinema too. So how much chance of enforcing the Newmarket development. Good old WMDC!!!
Aye, my old man would be turning in his grave if he could see the state of the Wakey Arms now, twas his local for decades. I'm really surprised though it hasn't been bought and converted into either flats, wth it being 3 stories. Or with Kirkgate Station getting finally redeveloped a new pub opening.
I remember the ABC Cinema getting planning consent for a load of flats and shops back in 2009 and apparentely through someone I know, who knows the owner of the site , funding fell through because of the recession. From what I've heard , the bloke bought the ABC Cinema as an invesment and obviously had big plans for it at one time, but since then has turned into a bit of a nightmare for him. Wth other funding etc falling through in the intervening years. Something needs doing with it though, the owner and Council need to get together and get the place redeveloped because it would do wonders for that side of town.
