O/T If music be your love..... : Fri Mar 16, 2018 5:13 pm
bren2k wrote:
I feel the same - I go to more gigs now than I have done since my late teens - early 20's, and it's a constant joy, unlike RL, or just about anything else I do with my leisure time. I would pick a gig over a match any day of the week.

I heard Billy Bragg speak with his usual eloquence about the resurgence of live music the other day, and it really resonated - basically, there is a deep human need for communion and shared experience, and a gig is a rare opportunity to connect with a musician who speaks to you, in the company of a room/hall/field full of people who feel the same way. I love it, and it never matters to me that I'm one of the oldest people in the room - I go with my daughter quite often, and we always have a whale of a time - especially since I've brainwashed her from a young age into liking actual real music, where people play instruments and sing with their own voice.

I feel exactly like this and I attend gigs fairly regularly these days. Give me a hot, sweaty room, mainly filled with male testosterone and... wait, am I still talking about gigs?

But yeah, love music and attending gigs and you've hit the nail on the head as for why.

Billy Bragg is on at Long Division this year, a good weekend event iat various locations in Wakefield City centre.

I don't think it was really going to crash the forum for this to be on the old thread as it was already dead but it's a good topic so we may as well have it as it's own thread.

Personally, my life revolves around music one way or another.
Work and family life mean I don't go to the smaller gigs that I sometimes went to in the past but there is nothing better than stumbling on a live act you've never heard of who can play.
I used to go into HMV and Borders back in the day and just pick CDs up that looked vaguely like something I might like and played them on the music stand. Found some great music that way.
My tastes are as eclectic as they come. I've been to see U2, Darkness, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen but I've also been to see Madonna, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Gloria Estefan..........right through to Simply Red, Elton John even S Club 7 (who were great by the way) and Spice Girls.
I've seen Tony Bennett, Tom Jones, Buddy Rich for those that know who that is
I like the country stuff too. Went to see Shania Twain and Dixie Chicks. One of my favourites is Lady Antebellum
I've seen Robbie Williams at Knebworth with 100,000 other people.

But I've seen a lot of bands where I don't even know who they are. New Roscoe in Leeds and the Hop in Wakefield where they were just convenient music at the time for a great night. They are often the best.
I found a guy at the Irish Centre I still really like called Bruce Cockburn. I'd never heard of him but friend from the US new him and dragged me along. Always play his Charity of Night album when I want to just zone out to good music while I work.

Alas I often now find good music on the soundtrack to films my kid watches, but there is some great music there too :)

Always regretted never seeing Thin Lizzy live, but next best thing is on at Warehouse 23 next Saturday, Limehouse Lizzy. Guitars and drums - proper music.

I really didn't appreciate how good they were first time round. Probably too young. I thought they were ok but wasn't in to them. Now, I look back and think they stand out as a top quality super group as people like to call them. Would have loved to see them live.

I'd really be impressed if you'd been to see Joe Bonamassa :D

Superb band, managed as a 15yr old to get into the changing rooms at Leeds uni to meet them, got Scott Gorhams (sp) chewing gum, still got it in my old scrap album alongside Zac Cleminsons (remember him?) plectrum and a rose from Joan Jetts stage outfit. I was hardcore in those days. :)
Thanks for separating this topic from the original poptart. ;)

I go to gigs with my daughters every now and then, mainly the Cribs, I've been called all sorts for knocking off a thirty year old woman at my age, never put them right. :)
