How short are memories for those that was yesteryear ?
The great Gary Cooper was never a good defensive full back, he was however an exceptional attacking full back behind a great 12 defensive team, 1965 to 1969 ! We did have options, next choice was Dick Paley, a better defensive full back but average in attack, our next option was a younger player called Geoff Wraith, a very strong defensive full back but learning attacking play !
Therefore we always chose Gary Cooper but as he got older & slower he was exposed & retired very early 70s.
So Geoff still was not an automatic choice, he left for Australia but couldn't get a regular place !
He came back & refused to sign for wakefield & signed for Castleford sighting a better club & opportunities, but
It still took Geoff a while to be a/the complete full back.
My analogy is that players develop at different rates of time to become a complete & competent player other than
A born natural exceptional player.
It is wrong to expect a player to be instantly a player with no mistakes, however the sign of a good player is to
Learn from mistakes & don't keep repeating the same mistakes, which becomes a weakness.
I therefore hope Max learns at a quick rate, his mentor, Grix has made howlers through out his career yet all feel
He is better.
Some fans quite rightly have their preferences but will be let down when they make mistakes etc.
Up the Trin.
