I dunno how I could have got it so wrong

duh

known Jowitt to have been dropped by CC, even after a very good game.

How short are memories for those that was yesteryear ?
The great Gary Cooper was never a good defensive full back, he was however an exceptional attacking full back behind a great 12 defensive team, 1965 to 1969 ! We did have options, next choice was Dick Paley, a better defensive full back but average in attack, our next option was a younger player called Geoff Wraith, a very strong defensive full back but learning attacking play !
Therefore we always chose Gary Cooper but as he got older & slower he was exposed & retired very early 70s.
So Geoff still was not an automatic choice, he left for Australia but couldn't get a regular place !
He came back & refused to sign for wakefield & signed for Castleford sighting a better club & opportunities, but
It still took Geoff a while to be a/the complete full back.
My analogy is that players develop at different rates of time to become a complete & competent player other than
A born natural exceptional player.
It is wrong to expect a player to be instantly a player with no mistakes, however the sign of a good player is to
Learn from mistakes & don't keep repeating the same mistakes, which becomes a weakness.
I therefore hope Max learns at a quick rate, his mentor, Grix has made howlers through out his career yet all feel
He is better.
Some fans quite rightly have their preferences but will be let down when they make mistakes etc.
Up the Trin.

Spot on.I remember them all!
My feeling really is that MJ is a natural FB who will get better. Hampshire is unknown in that position, but if he makes it his own I will be the first to compliment him. Whoever takes the role needs time but putting that point over to some on here is fruitless.

Hampshire isn’t an uknown quantity at FB he’s played there numerous times for numerous clubs, more so than HB tbh. The question is whether he’s any good at it.

I genuinely think the thing thats held Hampshire back as a full back is Hampshire himself. Whether it is him or his agent, it started at Wigan demanding to be a half. He has the raw attributes to be superb there but maybe his ego of where he should play holds him back from opening up and embracing the position

Gerry Round was, in my opinion, our best all round full back.
Great on attack and exceptional defensively. Hence his GB caps .

Yeah, it'd take too long to look up but I wouldn't be surprised if he's played FB more than HB also.

He's got all the tools to be a good FB, pace to burn, decent tackler and great in attack. It's the other attributes, like being good positionally, organising the defensive line, taking the high balls - things that Grix was pretty good at, are a bit of an unknown to me at least, with Hampshire.

The game has changed since some of those players named.
I have no doubt Gerry Round would be exceptional today as well but the most important skills now are organising the defense and running the line and passing to the centre/wing. Tackling is obviously important but not essential. Cover tackling more than straight on tackling too.

Hampshire's organisation I'm not sure about. He's certainly vocal but I can't say I've watched him. I have watched Max and I've seen him make mistakes.
Under the high ball Max is as good as anyone we've had for quite a while. I never doubt him. Hampshire is hit and miss. More hit than miss though.
In attack Hampshire is streets ahead and that's what get's him my vote. He could still learn from someone like Grix but he is fast, elusive and he has a great pass. Max dies with the ball so often when hitting the line. If he fixed that part of his game he would jump above Hampshire.

I think 'streets ahead' is a little OTT! He really isn't otherwise he'd have been at FB since he joined us.
I'm really not against him having a run at FB but let's keep things in perspective.
