Toronto are in the process of re-signing one of their former Canadian players - Quinn Ngawati - according to this weeks League Express. Apparently he made 3 appearances for them in 2017 then went on loan to London Skolars in 2018. A step in the right direction obviously, but still a hell of a long way to go.
Absolutely. Rugby League and it's quest for the silver bullet
There is potential to do something in N .America and Toronto's efforts in getting decent numbers through the turnstiles has been very, very good. However, now that they are spending only marginally more than the other sides in their league (as opposed to 3,4,5 times as much, they have been found wanting. Their squad is way too small in number and there is literally nothing underneath. If they continue to pick up a few more injuries, they may actually struggle to name a 21 man squad
I'd love to know what the long term vision is for all of this - assuming that those running the sport actually have a (long term) plan ??
Already happened, they haven't got 21 for tomorrow's game against Hudds, so they have named a 19 man squad.
Unfortunately, there are not millionaire and billionaire backers in Belfast, Dublin and Glasgow etc wanting to expand the game. We need Marwan Coolcash back in the game for a start. It was the fat controller who put him in Salford when there was a chance to expand. It's impossible to please everyone as we have a small core and plenty of insular views.
The key to expansion though is to preserve and develop the small core as well as expanding the new frontiers, as most of the players will come from the small core. Without that small core, the game dies. We all know that sports and clubs thrive on heritage and personal histories and traditions. A new frontier may be nothing more than a passing fad. When the fad passes, if you've let the core wither, there's nothing left.
As much as hardcore expanionists mock the M62 corridor, it is the bedrock of the game. Without it, you've nothing.
The key is to develop one without destroying the other. Better minds than mine can work out how to do it.
It's a tough one. A business will wither and die unless occasionally the balls are thrown in the air for a re jig. That applies to the game of Rugby League. Look at Barrow as an example of trying something radical this season. Ottawa are offering the same as Toronto with free flights and accomodation for teams but with Divison one, surely there is more of a chance of blooding young Canadians within the five year plan for Ottawa. Also, I am unsure why Valencia have not tried a season within the French structure to start up. RU is making a massive effort in North America and there is allegedly a difficult perception of what the two codes differences are and we may end up with a different name for marketing, I.e Footie, but that's for others. It is correct to say we are littered with failures, Kent Invicta, Southend, Mansfield etc but the M62 has its failures too, Blackpool, Runcorn, Lancashire Lynx, Chorley Borough etc.
Think a lot of clubs Blackpool Barrow Whitehaven ,ext went backward when S L started .Most S L clubs are way over there heads in det .If Sky pull the plug could be the end of S L .That kind of thing as not been allowed in Ozz. If you are not self self supporting you are out

It's a pedantic point, but I think some of those failed northern clubs might, in fact, be the same club. I think Blackpool became Lancashire Lynx who became Chorley Borough, but I accept you could throw Huyton in there and Bramley.
I agree with you broadly. I just think you have to do it carefully. Don't move house to a different neighbourhood. Build an extension on a house you love, if you know what I mean.
