When I left secondary school in 1963 ALL the secondary schools and junior schools in Wakefield played RL: Thornes House & QEGS played RU, although I believe Thornes House also had a RL team and I believe a certain Rodney Myerscough Walker was captain.. One of the top schools for RL in the Wakefield schools set up strangely was Felkirk Sec Mod school at South Hiendly which at that time didn't come under the Wakefield LEA area.

The school has been closed for twenty years or more but the buildings are still there.

Well BLM, we didn't miss each other by much - I went to Kettlethorpe High between 1977-1979 and it was definitely RL by then, certainly the school team was RL. There may have been some Union in games time, not sure. I always thought his name was Holdroyd and I do remember the slipper. Think he was replaced by a guy called Hooley??? the bloke couldn't pronounce his R's if I recall so in later years we played a game called Wugby :D

Gerald Ahtey's son was my best mate after we left school and best man at my wedding, I ended up calling his dad Gerald but I never got used to it. Think he's still alive and living in Bridlington with his third wife! though it's been a few years since I spoke to Jonathon (his son). Now Gerald, he was a character and then some

75 I left, recall Athey moving his table to one side in his office so he could get a good swing with the cane on my booty, all my mates were stood outside his office on the school drive having a right good laugh :(

Think the school has been replaced by either the new Outwood Grange school at Carlton; the Outwood Grange school at Shafton or the Outwood Grange School at Hemsworth, Fisherman

Have Outwood Grange taken over all the Academies in England????

Rugby is so far ahead of rugby league both on the pitch and off the pitch it’s embarassing

Purely a matter of opinion, Steph. Personally I think you couldn't be further from the truth, but the argument will go on as long as there are two different codes. It annoys me when people in the media just use the word "rugby", pompously believing that there is Rugby Union and nothing else.
Like many others on this forum I can recall when to mention Rugby League in front of a Union person was akin to the worst possible swear word.. and to play rugby for money was almost a capital offense. How the hypocritical times have changed.
At the 1979 fiftieth anniversay meeting ( and Neil Fox's 80th birthday get together) at the Red Shed last year ex Trinity and Wales RU internationa, Brian Juliffe, described to those gathered just how hypocritical and generally bent the so-called "amateur game" was.
RU so far ahead of RL....Nah! Sorry!

Yes, Snapethorpe played at senior level, I left school in 62, aged 15. I played a few times for the school team and can remember visiting schools such as Ings road and East moor,

RU administration and a wider spread of the game plus the 6 Nations but, the "product" comes a distant second to RL

RL in terms of profile and cash will never get anywhere close to Union in my lifetime and it's more likely in the longer term that RL will end up merging with Union.
Just imaging, if they had been a little more accepting of broken time payments all those years ago, we wouldn't have these conversations.
Having said that, I'm a proud RL fan and please that there was the split.
Maybe if they limited the amount of phases in RU and dropped a couple of players from each side, they to may have a decent game.

I was at kettlethorpe comp and definitely only played RU cos I captained them. Don’t know about junior school level.

ah yes, Kettlethorpe.....
Dont get me started....
Set of cheats!
Still grinds me......
Played them at RU - I went to Edward Sheerien Comp in Barnsley so circa 1980...
Anyway as we left the changing rooms, this giant with a full beard came out - I thought he was the ref.....
Then he said he was playing!! If he was "14" I'll run down Donny Rd naked! 14? My ae5e!!
Guess what?? we lost 64-0.
Anyway, managed to arrange a replay and fielded a couple of (over-aged) ringers......
They didn't win that game.
