So he may now count but previously he didn’t

From what I recall Tangata was on loan to us from Halifax and as such was on their quota not ours and remained so. Somewhere down the line he became a Trinity player and now he is on our quota. I assume we signed him up at the start of the 2020 season although I don’t recall it.

Either way he’s our player now and does take up a spot.

Makes you wonder if you couldn’t do a deal with a Championship club where they register a quota player, give him a few warm up games then loan him to us for the rest of the season. In return we could loan them some players to even out the cost. Players like either Walker or Kershaw would go down a bomb.

It’s unethical and maybe not possible I suppose but if it were I bet Wigan would do it!

How do you know he is a quota player Now?

I don’t tbh but seeing as MC said we had no spaces left and Gigot it appears from what’s said wasn’t taking up a space then I assume Tangata is. Could be wrong I’ll go with the flow.

I claim to know certain things but I don’t claim the quota rules to be one. I do remember MC stating Tangata wasn’t a quota player when he was on loan, that’s as far as my knowledge on the situation goes.

It has changed to just 7 non-federation trained players, the 5 & 2 rules is no longer a thing. French players count as federation trained due to Catalans and Toulouse being in the British game, although the visa situation may change moving forward for any new signings due to brexit.

As for Tangata his quota exemption after leaving Widnes counted for the duration of the first contract he signed with Halifax which was for two years, after that he would revert back to his previous non-fed status. He had to remain registered with Halifax to keep the exemption hence the loan deals rather than a transfer. Once his contract expired then he would have been on quota with them as well had he signed up there again.

Don't want to add to the confusion but i think Kolpak is no longer relevant after Brexit and they will be counted as overseas... I think this is what prompted the change/simplification as ex-kolpak will now be overseas rather than non-fed

Isn't Kolpak just a rugby league thing though, irrelevant to EU and Brexit, to stop teams packing squads with Aussies and encouraging local talent?

No, it's an EU thing as far as I'm aware and started in handball, not RL. Marcus Kolpak I think the player was called.

I wouldn’t worry because we all know this is never going to happen and I doubt he would get a visa to join any team with the possible exception of Catalan.

Let’s hope so. Massive risk and big wedge. Not a player we should touch imo. He wasn’t all diamonds and had a number of sub par games by all accounts. Two of which were against us.
