Re: Poching cant coach : Sat Jul 09, 2022 6:41 pm
I said it when he got the job and I stick by it: never appoint the assistant who got the benefit of a post-sacking bounce. We did it in 2005 with Tony Smith and he almost took us down the year after. We did it with Webster, who had a post-sacking bounce. I cannot think of a single Super League example of a former assistant who stepped in after the previous head-coach was sacked and who went on to do well. It's because you have the same-old same-old. I just hoped I was wrong. Some people are meant to be assistants. Willie is one, as he always has been.I don't think he's helped by his squad, who are too old and jaded, probably as sick of it all as we are, but I think that is partly to do with the increased success of the NRL. All the best English players head there and now no decent Aussies come over, so the top clubs get the best of the rest and we get glorified Championship players. There are players at some of the top clubs who would never have got in them fifteen years ago, and maybe would have ended up with us.
But the promoted assistant was a disaster waiting to happen, and now the disaster is happening. We are one Toulouse win away from relegation.
