I just can't see that we have not made one of the hottest properties in SL a suitable offer.
So, perhaps he knows he has far more chance of playing for England and winning trophies with Saints than with us, and that's what it's about, not just money.
I just don't want a player bent on leaving, playing out the season. I'd rather cash in, and give one of the other lads who WANT to play for Trinity the chance.
All this of course is if the rumours are true!

A tricky situation this, there is still relegation at the end of this season, before the IMG grading comes into force. We need to retain our strongest squad for this season to ensure we are not relegated. (ignore what Schofield writes) After this season on field performance won’t decided relegation or not.

whilst I totally agree with what you're saying, we do need players on the park who are committed to the cause.
I sincerely hope he pens a new deal and then I'll be convinced he is committed.

We are not in a position to lose a player like Murphy. Why would a club buy him now he is out of contract at the end of the season and a club like Saints can wait, the situation may be different if they thought we had the ability between now and May to agree a new contract, I guess they don’t.
I regret the reality is that our squad is not strong or in the whole experienced, sorry but that is a fact even though some remain in denial. I have said before we need to survive, we have pushed our luck to a point that some on here believe we are immune to relegation we are not. We can continue on a Championship budget but our chances to progress would be fatally flawed.

Lol. I thought you'd jump on this one.
He's in contract for next season.

It isn't a fact that the squad isn't strong or experienced. That's just your opinion. It may be true at the end of the season. But it isn't a fact yet.

And it's also ironic that you say we are not experienced enough but want us to retain a player with less than a seasons worth of games to remedy it.

We have no idea what he was on, what the new offer is, whether he will accept a better offer or whether he just wants to go after next season.
He certainly can't not play well on purpose as some have implied as he'll do his next contract in with Sts. Ritson will be aiming to rip up trees this season to convince them he's their guy.

DONT TOUCH THE WATCH

Re: Lewis Murphy : Mon Jan 02, 2023 7:56 pm
I find it strange how Corey Hall has signed a 2 year deal, with good young British centres being as rare as hens teeth, yet Murphy has not. Both Hall and Murphy have the same agent too. I commented a couple of month back regarding Murphy’s future with his agent SMTMUK making a comment regarding Murphy’s future looking elsewhere.

I still think Murphy owes us a little bit more, given the opportunity and support he's had from the club and the fans. If Saints offer blows us out of the water then there's little MC/JM can do, I just hope it's not marginal. We do suffer from Players Agents seeing us as a staging point and shop window.

Less then a year ago many of us were on SM telling the lad to keep his chin up, that we were all right behind him and to move on from that nightmare debut v Leeds. If only he'd slowed that improvement down a bit.

As previously stated big Dave had offers from various clubs during his tenure with us ,and I would suspect for more money , but loyalty kept him at our club ,let’s see if Murphy shows us that same level of commitment.

Re: Lewis Murphy : Mon Jan 02, 2023 8:46 pm
It isn't loyalty.

Dave stayed because it was right for him. Whether it was that he liked his colleagues, maybe he liked being the big fish and the adulation, maybe he liked Wakefield as a location or even just that he didn't like change.
Could be anything. But just being loyal without anything else is really unlikely.

I love where I work. But if I get to a point that I can't pay my mortgage, I won't be staying out of any loyalty. It has to be two way.

can you remember Gareth Ellis ? he went to Leeds for less than he was offered at Wakey. With some players it can be more than money. I know we have offered a very good contract but he is not accepting it so it must be something we can't offer.

Plus does anyone honestly think he would turn us down if he had no other options on the table. Anyone who thinks Saints have not approached him is either under 4yrs old or living in cloud Cuckoo land. There is no way anyone can accuse MC or the club for not trying their utmost.

Wakefield sold Gareth Ellis. Initial money wasn't great for wakefield but they nicked the boxing day fixture from Cas as part of the agreement for the next 3 years which earned them an extra 50k plus a year.

I’ve said before … but to reiterate… I’m happy to enjoy Lewis as a Wakey player now… this season…

The future will look after itself, with or without him.

Here in Aus players sign contracts with new clubs for 12 months hence and play full seasons and with full commitment for the teams they are a part of. Players staying at clubs for their careers is really rare now.

Plus we still get a fee if he moves on at the end of his contract!

From what I understand he hasn’t asked for anything even close to £100k - I asked vasty a couple of weeks back what he though Murphy’s worth was; but he didn’t reply - easily missed as the thread was about something else - what do you feel is a fair salary for someone of Murphys talent/stage of development?
If the requested figure I was told is correct; then I can’t believe the contract wasn’t drawn up & signed on the same day!

The length of contract, besides yearly / season renumeration will come into it [for both club and player] i would think.
