If the ball went backwards (so presumably towards their line) and the player who picked it up was stood in front of him and was offside, how did it go backward? Or did he actually pick it up behind the point of contact and so is onside?

Agreed

We could really do with pushing the boat out and getting an aus ref over for a bit, see if he can't raise the bar.
I'm all for producing our own refs but we're in a bit of a bind atm, if aus is the home of the great and the good, it couldn't hurt to borrow one.....for science.

I’ve spoken to a friend who is a ref and done it for quite a while now but still young and played the game,who refs championship games and been touch and in goal official in SL games but can’t get a gig in the middle and in his words “ it’s a click and if your face doesn’t fit you’re struggling “ I’ve seen this kid ref and he’s been very good, even penalised Jordan would love to see him given a chance

If this is who I think you are referring to, I agree 100% he's a great ref, ref' a televised Toronto game their last one in league 1 and did a Sterling job
