Epidemic: a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time.
Pandemic: (of a disease) prevalent over a whole country or the world.
Doesn't matter what you prefer to call it, it's clearly the latter of the 2 definitions
As for the response, something that is subjective, the UK have responded based on the ability of the NHS to come with those needing treatment, with the main "thrust" being to ensure that hospitals, particularly ICU departments, were not and are not over run. I do agree that treatment will improve (it already has) but, "we" first of all have to survive this winter, which will be a more severe test for resources than earlier this year. Hence the nightingale hospitals being kept available. Let's just hope that they aren't required to work at capacity.
Where this falls down is the fact that the Nightingale hospitals haven't been used at all. If if was so "rife" and the NHS overrun, they would have been - as that's exactly what they were created for.
"The critical moment in recent weeks can be traced back to 21 September, when Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK's chief scientific adviser and Prof Chris Whitty, the UK's chief medical adviser, warned of the need for immediate action. In a televised briefing, Sir Patrick warned cases could reach 50,000 a day by mid-October if they doubled every seven days, as had happened in recent weeks."
Funny that, despite the doom of the two experts, they "could" But they haven't reached 20,000.....

Now, hang on, it is 24th in the list of causes of death in UK (allegedly not taking into account the fiddled statistics) . Fix the top 23 first then worry about the "virus!
Of course, for the reasons set out, there is no insentive for the powers that be just the usuall "smoking kills" or advice on units of alcohol, the hand wringing about the deadly amounts of sugar in our childrens diets, the adatives, the preservatives, the e numbers, mobile phone radiation, the health experts and scientists have been warning us about for years.
No1. should be the terrible carnage caused by the misuse of alcohol including drunk drivers, road deaths, liver disease, brain and nervous system disease, gout, domestic violence, obesity, cancer, diabetis, addiction, digestive problems, anemia, heart disease, Heavy drinking can hamper your immune cells from fighting off viruses and bacteria. and lets not forget the terrible toll all this has upon the NHS, especially over the weekends when NHS staff are overwhelmed and often assaulted.
And to think they kept the off licenses open during the first lockdown
Now does that not put your covid into perspective? Does it not ring alarm bells as in "Why covid and not this lot the government want's us to be safe from, enough to lock us down and lose us our livlehoods? And I haven't even started on smoking.
Does it not show that the responce to covid is totaly disproportionate in the grand scheme of things?
Unless of course covid is a smokescreen, a vehicle to deliver something else..... W.E.F.
Before I get accused of running an anti-alcohol campaign I drink, not to access, well I did a month or so back but that's another story. So yes, I like a drink just like anyone else

I was going to re-produce this text from a poster that I saved many months ago. But then I thought, nah, I'll get all the regulation “conspiracy theory” snipes.
But here goes: An explanation to where all this going. CAUTION.....A face mask is required for entry.
then CAUTION.....A Vaccine I/D is required for entry.
then CAUTION.....A Digital I/D is required for entry.
But then I read this. Now folks, this could be your route back to watching rugby at Belle Vue. We could all be wearing these around our necks just like cows and Kitties. At least those of us smart enough not to own a smart phone.
“Along with the athletes, 500 members of the London Marathon operational team are all wearing devices around their neck, helping to implement social distancing in the run up to the race. The technology, developed by Tharsus, has been named Bump. Using Radio Frequency technology, the device instantly alerts when a wearer gets too close to another person. They also store data of which other Bump devices you’ve been in proximity with, so in the case of a positive test, organisers will be able to take action to prevent further transmission.
Hugh Brasher has praise the technology, revealing he’d hoped to roll it out to the mass participation event, should it have gone ahead this October. ‘We have been working with Tharsus for many months and, when we were still hoping to deliver the mass participation event on its usual route, we were planning to supply all participants with the Bump technology in order to hold a socially-distanced mass event. It shows how important a role technology can play in the current situation’ said Brasher.
'This will not only provide vital support to clubs and organisations suffering a significant impact on their revenue but have a huge boost for national morale. The Virgin Money London Marathon is a foremost example of this; it is a hugely symbolic sporting event and we are delighted to be playing a role in facilitating its delivery in such challenging circumstances.'
The device will not be worn during the race, however, with athletes taking them off just before the starting line.”
Funny thing is though. They say “we have been working with Tharsus (on this) for many months” Did they know something we didn't all those months ago? And we all thought it would be over by the summer.
OK, I didn't but apparently I'm a "conspiracy theorist ."

So, are you saying that, anyone who doesn’t have a smartphone is somehow uneducated or has lower intelligence? I don’t have a smartphone, it’s not top of my list of priorities, never has been, and I manage fine without one.
Where this falls down is the fact that the Nightingale hospitals haven't been used at all. If if was so "rife" and the NHS overrun, they would have been - as that's exactly what they were created for.
Some were used earlier in the year.
As for the NHS being over run, the whole point of the restrictions and the lockdown etc, was to prevent numbers from getting "out of control". The very fact that these hospitals haven't been "cleared" and made ready for gig's and conferences seems to indicate that they may well be needed as we get into the winter months. Let's hope they aren't needed.

No, they are merely a tool of the modern era. A dolly tub and washboard work just fine but, a washing machine seems rather more efficient, dont you think. I'm a long way from being a technological whizz kid, a long way but, if we dont keep up with innovation, how does the world progress. Dont see too many typing pools these days or people chiseling messages in stone - it's progress
Some of the new stuff is superb and some bloody awful, we all have a choice whether to use it.
"smart enough not to own one" was a bizarre comment, with the inference that they are a total negative, with zero benefits, when I would suggest that for most that have them, they are certainly viewed as beneficial.

I agree, my smart devices have been beneficial to keep up with people and as I live on my own, a way to help stop loneliness, if that stop me being smart, so be it

Ah here we go, ignore the argument, nit pick a throwaway sentence.
Tell me, why do I need a smart phone? Nothing in my life warrants one of these devises. Your over the top analogy is very poor. "Caveman without a chisel" indeed..
The way I see it future generations will see the smartphone as a ball and chain to be carried around at all costs. Till the chips get inplanted anyway.
Now there's an analogy.
PS I used to own one so I know what I'm supposed to be missing. NOTHING!
Now, how about debating the rest of the post, not this selective sniping.
