Slightly off topic I know but I remember the bloke who wrote to the Yorkshire Post saying how fantastic Leeds was, how everything was marvellous and it was a wonderful place to live. Somebody from Wakefield wrote in arguing with him and eventually asked him where he lived. The answer? Sandal!! You couldn't make it up.

I've told this tale on this forum before and apologise to all, but just to show what makes Leeds so unpopular with most RL fans was an incident during the sixties. For some reason Leeds had been banned from the Yorkshire Cup competition for that particular season. The following season we got through to the YC final and who should our opponents be ?....... LEEDS. The RL insisted that the final should be played at Headingley would you believe.
I was at that final and if I remember correctly "spawny" Leeds won the game, 3-0. That ground advantage possibly made all the difference between us being winners and runners up. That's just one of the reasons Trinity, and others, hate Leeds so much. You wouldn't understand vasty et al.

If the two sides in Northern Ireland can bury the hatchet then I think I can get over something that happened in the sixties.

You said yourself it's "A generation thing". and as we're of different generations then you're giving way to the possibility that you can't understand. So not patronising at all.
and if you think the two sides in Northern Ireland have buried the hatchet, well I'll tell you something, vasty owd lad. that'll never happen in our lifetime.

Vasty aside, I remember another incident that just illustrates why there is such generic disliking of Leeds.
I was on my way home from a match in Lancashire one Sunday and I had Radio Leeds on the car radio listening to Boydy (John Boyd), who was the guy who presented the rugby league programme at the time.
He opened the show by stating that: "it was a sad day for West Yorkshire as Leeds had lost that afternoon". I was so lnsensed that I pulled over and rung Boydy on the phone-in, and pointed out that it wasn't a sad day for West Yorkshire at all because most of the fans in the county hated Leeds anyway. He quickly went to the next call.

Really, I travel to Belfast once a month at least. The only people who think like that these days in my favourite city are a tiny number of fanatics who don’t represent anyone anymore.

Go there and take a look rather than living in the past.

Anyway we are straying a bit from topic now.

I don’t mind Leeds most of the time, you do, we will leave it there.

Some really good comments on here either for or against Leeds and it`s good to see the season is almost upon us.
Personally I don`t see the arrogance from Leeds towards the other teams but I would say that.
And I really don`t buy into the dirty Leeds tag some of you have come up with but each to their own.
Like most sports in this country we love the underdog and love to see a good team get beat.
I couldn`t stand Steve Davis and thought he always got the rub of the green.
The incident with Shoebottom was caused by Colin Dixon kicking him in the head as he scored a try Leeds vs Salford at Headingley.
I`ve supported leeds all my life and was very friendly with the great John Atkinson and for Vasty I was also friendly with Joe Jordan and Gordon McQueen even after they signed for MU lol.
I agree MU have more a dislike for Liverpool followed by Man City.
Leeds United fans like to think they have a rivalry with MU.
Thanks for all the comments it has been interesting and having lived in Wakefield in the past and now back again I think the place has a lot to offer but not as good as Leeds though
