1979 Wembley Final : Sat May 04, 2019 8:02 pm  

Fortieth anniversary today of the 1979 Widnes final. A great time was spent at "The Red Shed" Labour club this afternoon listening to very interesting, humorous and entertaining anecdotes of that day from former players Andy Fletcher, Trevor Midgely, Trevor Skerrett, Brian Lockwood, Brian Juliffe, Graham Idle, Les Sheard, Steve Diamond. Mike Lampkowski and Bill Kirlbride. Organised by Les Sheard, and in the presence of the great Ian Brooke and birthday boy Neil Fox a fantastic time was had by all. Particularly of interest was Juliffe's account of how/why he left RU for RL and the acute descrimination against League in Welsh Rugby Union. There was a very amusing account of how the club got through to the final, written and read by the inimitable Trin historian Gerry Wright.

A great, great afternoon.

Trevor Skerrett was the reason I was taken to my first game.
There was some my dads bigger than your dad thing going on between us kids down the 17th Wakefield scouts, so to end it Akela took us down to Belle Vue to see some proper big dads.

TS was a massive dad, never forgave her for shattering my big dad illusion...lol

There was also a celebratory dinner in Cats bar last night when most of the above players were in attendance too and a further 4 all-time Trinity Greats were inducted into the Trinity Hall of Fame. The most notable of which was Johnny Thompson, who clearly had been kept in the dark, as he was in tears when he was called up onto the stage to the loudest cheer of the night, as he didn't believe he was worthy of this accolade !!!!!!
It truly was a memorable night for those of us that are old enough to have been to Wembley in '79 and it was great to see, and speak to, some of those true Trinity legends, but the icing on the cake was me and my Bruv taking the opportunity to have our photo taken with the Great Neil Fox on his 80th birthday (my new avatar)

Speaking of Neil Fox, I have a heavily bias news feed in favour of photographica to my phone, so I get this link from YEP to a selection of "11 never seen before photos of Wakefield through the ages". There are various historic occupational and environmental documentary photo's from way back, including pic 9 which is a photo of Neil Fox in 1962 laying on a bed "resting after the Challenge Cup final in which he won the man of the match award" I've lost track of what the sketch is regarding posting links here, I'll post it anyway, I'm sure PT will sweep it up if its against the AUP.. https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/latest/the-11-never-seen-before-photos-of-wakefield-through-the-ages-1-9749564 It say's something about the man and his association with the City that this photo is deemed relevant to the collection.
