Remember watching Gary in a kicking duel with Terry Price the Bradford Northern full back in 1969 in a 2nd round cup replay at Belle Vue. With all the players in the middle of the pitch Price and Cooper in their full back positions must have kicked 10 times, up and unders at each other which resulted in Price knocking on and giving Wakefield a scrum on the Bradford 25 yard line. Wakefield won the game 10 - 0 having drawn 7 - 7 the previous night at Headingley as Odsal was unfit to play on, Wakefield finished up playing 3 cup games in 4 days that week due to a back log of games thanks to the terrible winter.

Too young to have seen him play but, its always sad when one of the golden era for Trinity passes.

Remember that particular game of "foot tennis" with Terry Price very well, Trinity. A great rally. Along with Gerry Round and Geoff Wraith the best full back I've seen in a Trinity jersey.

RIP Gary. A Trinity great!!!

Saw him many times but I have a faint overriding memory of him scoring a try for us during the old Wills Embassy Sevens at Headingley, maybe very late 60s early 70s. Running under the sticks from well out and constantly glancing back over his shoulder at the chasing pack. We might have even won it that year?

Had a quick look back at the programme from the 1971 tournament. Trinity team:-

1. G Cooper (capt)
2. K Slater
5. E. McDonagh (cant say as I remember this guy)
7. D Topliss
8. B West (another ?)
9. D Hawley
10 M Morgan (Cas legend  )
14, J Marston

Brian West: A tall strong running ex RU international that played in the second row. He didn't live up to his reputation
Eddie McDonagh: a short left winger who never quite made it big at Trinity

Eddie McDonagh was a Powderhall sprinter very fast but not the best Rugby player. We used to call him Eddie McDoughnut.
