Yes, I believe this was. Well known local metal scrap dealer, who ended up in court on VAT and other tax charges, if memory serves me well, he also received a custodial sentence.

Who was that Dunkirk? Sounds almost identical to the Eric France scenario around 5/6 years ago.

Sorry, was my understanding "Eric France" as a company was a sponsor of our club - Or do you think his son sponsored us out of his own pocket and reaped none of the tax benefits associated with the sponsorship for Eric France (JKL) ?

No he's right mate, do you not remember the 2010 shirt?

Right in the middle of the shirt it said:

"ERIC FRANCE'S SON"

Many thought it actually said Scrap Metal Merchants under it but they were wrong, Lil Wayne is right.

I believe the salary cap issues referred to in the links were created after John Pearman (?) went back on a sponsorship promise.

The Jonathan / Eric France farce came much later

I was sat at the side of Eric France on the same table as him in the corporate entertainment area, the chap on the other side of him who happens to also post on here asked him about his sponsorship with the club and was told that the sponsorship deal was with his son Jonathan and not him, make of it what you will.

Eric France Limited were the sponsors Jonathon France was MD at the time and organised the deal he also funded his other sporting and leisure interests through his company connections albeit through questionable accounting leading to the demise of Eric France the business and eventually leading to Jonathon spending time as a guest of Her Majesty. A man with big money aspirations but no actual money of his own.

I do believe it was the son that was taken to court and did serve the sentence.

Yes that's correct. We were sponsored (in theory) by Sainsbury's during those 1st couple of seasons. That was the land deal that eventually sent Ted to the wall.
It was difficult to follow what we actually did wrong but I thought it was something like: we were evaluated on what we should have paid the players (the contracts) but in actual fact we went tits up and didn't get the income but also didn't pay the players anyway. Accountants battled it out for weeks.

Yeah, it was in 2000, way before Eric France sponsorship problems etc in 2012.
