In this example it's the same.
You are right that some coaches moan to the controller but that isn't what you said.
You said they moaned that he didn't lean towards them. Very different.

Am I the only person who doesn't even check who the ref is, because it's entirely irrelevant to the outcome in all but the most rare and extreme examples?

It’s part of the match day tradition amongst other things,such as having pre match pie and pint, to discuss match day officials, we all have opinions of them from past experiences of seeing them in action.

I could happily watch a game and never know who the ref is.

I'll never forgive Child for his FORTY TWO penalties in our game against Cas at the Millennium stadium all those years ago.
I have to say that everything that has happened since is tainted by his "performance" on that day.

It was (and still is) a long way to Cardiff and that guy ruined the game and the day.
