Tom Allen show : Wed Dec 30, 2020 10:25 pm
Just watched the show where he visits Wakefield.

Tbh I thought it would be a total Micky take but it wasn’t that bad just a bit daft.

He mentioned Trinity a few times and tbh he got a fairly muted response.

It goes to show I suppose how far down the cities pecking order the club has fallen when the Pie shop gets a far better response.

Likewise goes to show how much we need the stadium upgrade and even more importantly that we need to win something and soon!

Come on lads you know you can do it, please we are begging you

Thought the same to be honest, it shows how far down the pecking order the club is to its primary target market. My issue has always been if you weren't a fan you would hardly know the club exists, there is just no promotion beyond social media. I get that it costs money and the CEO is not a speculate to accumulate kind of guy but we should be pulling in far great crowds than what we do.

Case in point, where would Castleford Tigers have been on that top five list of an equivalent list?!

I'm pretty sure I saw BLM in the Trinity line up and possibly Johnny Thompson.

I get your point but all the promotion in the world won’t help us unles we win something or at least reach a final.

The ground scares off a lot of people but that would be less of an issue to most if we actually competed on a regular basis like Cas do.

Imagine what traction we’d have got if we’d done what Salford have in recent years and they had no budget at all for a while.

Our off field failings most notably the ground play a part but our true failings are on the pitch and that’s the truth. Last silverware the YC 1992? Last Wembley 1979 and last major trophy 1968. You can’t stay relevant and cherished in a largeish place like Wakefield with results like that you just can’t. Especially when you once had a legendary team.

Truth is most people in Wakefield even quite young ones know Wakefield were once a force in some sport probably Rugby. What they don’t do is connect that club to the current club, I think most think that club disappeared years ago and the one they are vaguely aware of today is som kind of tribute act and in a way they are correct.

Until we find 30 players who can do the job we will never get the attention we crave. All the off field initiatives just won’t make dent at the moment imho, points really do make prizes.

Tom Allen actually gave the club far more credence than it actually has.

I don't think we need to win something to get crowds back. The stadium and the marketing is the key.
Our marketing isn't bad but who really, even if we win something is going to come down to Belle Vue. We do it because we have history with the place but we are always going to find it hard without something a bit more comfortable or welcoming.

Sorry PT but it simply isn’t, marketing is a myth in that you can only market success whether that be sausages or Rugby.

Apart from a hard core most people simply will not keep paying to see failure. You could give them a throne to sit on and it wouldn’t help. I think your being incredibly unrealistic.

Look at Cas, a marginally better stadium but twice the gates with a quarter of the population. Please explain how they achieve that. I’ll tell you, they have been to Wembley and Old Trafford in the last ten years and have actually won a Trophey in living memory, well not quite but almost.

You are clearly steeped in the club and the sport which is fine but it’s blinded you a bit imo. Most people aren’t, they just want the reflected glory. I know for a fact that a fair few ‘current’ Cas fans are from Wakefield and once supported the team, then again there are some Rhinos fans who are the same and the ones who went over to the Bulls in their glory days.

We mean nothing to most of the cities population because we never win anything. Sure a new stadium especially the improved commercial revenue will help fund better players but until we actually win again or at least compete in finals you can forget a bout us re-entering the public’s consciousness and them returning in numbers.

Sorry, wish I were wrong, I often am but not this time.

Re: Tom Allen show : Thu Dec 31, 2020 8:53 am
Unless the club gets a rich backer, I'm afraid any success is going to have to come from the support and the revenue that brings. That's why I never understood the complaints about paying £5 for a pint of larger and people who went to the con club instead.

In short the crowds are going to have to come first so we need to do all we can to get the club into the city's thoughts. Who else but supporters know who Tom Johnstone or David Fifita are? They should be known throughout the city.

I dont know how much was cut out or what kind of involvement the club had in the programme last night but it was a great opportunity to promote the club. I imagine when life presents the ability to do so again the Mining Museum, the Theatre Royal, the Pie Shop and even Mully's dinner will have an increase in customers/visitors.

Re: Tom Allen show : Thu Dec 31, 2020 8:55 am
It will take a major change in direction before the club can gain the interest of the city public in general. It used to amaze me just how many bulls shirts and car stickers you used to see in Wakefield not that long ago.
People like to be associated with ssucess and would crawl over broken glass to be part of it in the present stadium or a new one.
The club just seems content to continue on its present path and providing it can take 3000 people with it things are unlikely to change.
Its sickening how supporters have become part time accountants and have forgotten any type of expectation of true success.
