Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith backflips on two ref-system
By Josh Massoud
March 14, 2009 Cameron Smith performed a remarkable about-face in his views on the NRL's two-referee system on Friday night, going from cynic to supporter in the space of two weeks.
After he openly criticised the concept in the wake of Melbourne's trial against Brisbane a fortnight ago, Smith emerged from last night's game a converted man.
"I thought it was good -- Shayne (Hayne) and Gavin (Badger) did a good job.
"I thought there was a huge improvement on our trial a couple of weeks ago. It seems as though they've listened to the players and coaches and laid off the whistle."
For the record, 18 penalties were blown in the first-ever NRL game played under the new system but, perhaps more encouragingly, there was not a single referral to the video referee.
