Martin has been a decent SL centre playing in 'weaker' SL teams for years. Not as good as Domic was but a similar style of player and no mug. He knows what playing centre is about and is an out and out centre. Turner did OK last season but wasn't as good as some are making out - he is still in the 'potential' centre category and I hope he gets further time to prove himself.
My problem with the signing is that Martin is 33. 4 or 5 years ago I would have been reasonably happy with the signing if, as seems obvious, we were unable to bring in an NRL centre instead. This must be Martin's last year in SL and it's very much a 1 year stop gap. McRae/Gentle obviously feel that we need more proven depth and although probably not an ideal choice will have to do based on what's available and may prove to be not as bad as some fear.
I think thats a fair assessment Staffs. Martin's not as bad as is being said, he probably just hasn't got any more than a year in his legs (unless he surprises us all.) He's always taken the eye whenever i've seen him, and although Yeamo is an international he doesn't have Martins experience yet and I'm sure part his remit is also to help Turner, Crooks et al.
Lets not forget also that he won't be a big earner and that has got to leave more £££s in the pot for a bigger signing(s)
