I know squad numbers don't tell the whole story, but they do give a certain amount of indication about who is and isn't first choice, so here are a few things to note about them: Only 9 of the 17 tonight had a squad number between 1 and 17, so almost half of the team was not first choice. Our
average squad number tonight wasn't even between 1 and 17, it was 19. This was significantly influenced by 5 of tonight's squad having numbers over 25; at the start of the season these players were not even close to being in our plans.
I think what we really need now is for the season to end, as it seems quite clear that there are a few in our camp who are pretty much done for the year, and several who just aren't good enough and we need to replace them. I'm as fed up as any with the last few seasons of 'wait until next year', but at least this time I feel like the people running the club actually feel the same and want to put it right. The recruitment announcements need to show that faith is not misplaced.
