All you did was assume that someone had heard of his visit to the specialist and jumped to the wrong conclusion.
It's as plausible a reason as any. In fact it's the most plausible reason - similar rumours get started almost every day. It may even have been news of the meeting - there were a fair few people who would have known about it.
