Lets be honest here, we are entitled to be a couple of weeks behind the majority of Championship and Championship One teams with all that has happened ... and we possibly are.
However, the performance tonight bodes very well.
We were slightly unfortunate not to go in level at half-time (lucky bounce for Buttery who in all honesty was probably Batleys best player on the night - how often does that sort of thing happen?).
When the Dogs scored first in the second half, it would have been easy for the lads to let the game slip away from them. That wasn't the case here - having held onto a now rampant Bulldogs attack for the next 10 minutes without conceding, they gradually established another foothold in the game and little by little began turning the screw against a tiring Batley rearguard.
Tries from China, Cooky and finally Ryan Steen to add to a first half try credited to Ross Divorty (could well have been Pete Green) ensured that despite struggling with injuries to Divorty, Cook and Kyle Briggs late on, the Dons emerged victorious.
Don't get me wrong, there are things to work on, things to be improved but considering the bigger picture, loss of financial backer, loss of coach, loss of half of last seasons promotion winning team (half a dozen now elsewhere and three still out injured) I believe that all connected with the Club, management, coaching staff, players etc can be proud of where we have got to so far!
I for one can't wait for the next fixture (London away on Sunday).
Also a mention for the those who made it to Batley to support the team. Well done - I'm sure that the support was noticed and well received by the players. Who knows, it might just have made a difference to the result!
Come on you Dons!
