Local Club's 2011 Round Up : Wed Dec 28, 2011 9:26 pm
Dons' community coach Adam Lloyd rounds up the local rugby scene for 2011 and predicts what the remainder of the season holds for each respective club. Bentley Good Companions will be looking to re-group after the festive period having suffered three consecutive defeats in the run up to Christmas.
Runners up in the Yorkshire Premier league last season, the Companions aim to go one better and avenge last year's final loss against current leaders Fryston.
Andy Whitfield has assembled a young and talented squad and is reaping the benefits as the likes of Scott Smith, Craig Whincop, Tom Flounders and Mick Rogerson impress week in, week out.
Bentley have forged a great partnership with Wheatley Hills RU and with junior rugby League making the summer switch they could before long have an abundance of junior teams at the club providing rugby all year round.
Prediction: play off final
Doncaster Toll Bar are nicely nestled in the play-off spots as the season reaches the half-way point. They will be looking at a top 3 finish to secure home advantage come the end of the season.
The loss of player coach, Craig Lawton, to the Dons will be a huge blow on the pitch but 'the show must go on' as they say. Toll Bar aim to do just that and with a youthful and exciting squad playing attractive rugby the wins are sure to follow.
Young full-back Aaron Rodwell is making a name for himself with week after week man of the match performances. This, coupled with the successful U18's squad, coached by Peter Green, mean that the foundations are being put in place for Toll Bar to be a real force in the Yorkshire Premiership in the next few years.
Prediction: Toll Bar to finish in the play-offs and there's no reason they can't reach the final. Anyone can clinch the title in the one-off games
Moorends Marauders currently sit fifth in Pennine League Division one and are chasing the top two teams in Bank Top Harriers and Birkenshaw. The league is wide open with any of the top six teams capable of beating each other on their day.
Moorends will have a tough training schedule over the Christmas period in preparation for their National Cup game away at Glasson Rangers (Workington). They will also look to launch an assault on the league and aim to close the gap with the four games they have in hand over the top three clubs.
If Moorends manage to stay injury free they can win promotion to the Championship but only time will tell. The formation of a reserve team has given regular playing opportunities for fringe players and there's plenty of competition for first team places.
The Marauders also have a new under 16's squad up and running with the sons of former first team regulars Howard Roberts and Brian Hodgkiss playing. New containers for storage, a portable kitchen block and pitch improvements are coming in the New Year so all bodes well for the Marauders in 2012.
League Prediction: top 3 (in no particular order), Moorends Marauders, Bank Top Harriers, Crigglestone and Kettlethorpe
