I remember the Hull KR match & recall looking at the two sides in the programme before kick-off and thinking that at least if we were going to be beaten, it would be by some quality players.

Their side had at least 10 or 11 players with international experience and little Donny weren’t going to stand a chance.

I think this match and a John Player Trophy win over Salford(?) I think the season before was the start of one of the best periods of following the Dons in my lifetime.

These kind of matches make it all worthwhile and compensate for all the other crap we’ve had to endure over the years.

I think the game you are referring to was the 1st round of the John Player Special Trophy played on 30th November 1986 with the Dons scoring a 18-14 victory over Hull KR,try scorers for the Dons were Gibbon,Parkhouse & Jones with David Noble adding three goals the attendance was 3,244

I still have got a DVD of this game.

Yep that's it.
I seem to remember they had a player playing in the fullback role.
A hefty bloke for a fullback.
Can't remember if he came on as a sub, but the white bits of his jersey were really white, so he may have.
Well he had a mare in the second half much to the delight of the Dons fans.

I've got a video of it. It was so dark in the second half that the TV screen just gets blacker and blacker as the game progresses. Was the commentator on the video someone called David Doyle Davidson, an ex-Hull player? I thought he did a good job. I can't remember the nickname he gave Parky? Was it Garth? I'm not sure now.

Would love a copy of that. Remember when the game finished
going on the field for same autographs and Gibbo taking me
Into the changing rooms with all the players.

Yes I remember the cup game against Hull KR, also the 30- 0 that we beat them at the new craven park, with mansson tahwei and weston running the show
Also Rochdale away when mansson was sent off in the first minute when he took tahwei out

Yes the match commentator was ex Hull player David Doyle Davidson but the strange thing is he didn't even attend the game,as it was such a momentous occasion for the Dons I got hold of the original Dons vhs tape of the game without commentary & tracked down Doyle Davidson in Hull & persuaded him to go to a film studio in Hull and watch the tape & dub his commentary on to the tape.

Later on I transferred the tape on to a DVD.

I was at this game as a Hull fan. Always remember it as we were stood on the steps behind the sticks, and one of the conversions hit my sister on the head when she wasn't looking
