Fixtures: Hunslet v Oldham, Workington v Dons

Hunslet can't catch Newcastle but could be caught by the Dons if they lose to Oldham. Hunslet lose, Dons win, we finish 4th...unless Hunslet lose by one point and we win by one point. In that case the points difference would be identical!

If we lose to Workington, Workington would finish fifth and we would finish 6th.

Should we draw at Workington, we would remain in 5th spot.

In the play offs, Team 5 is at home to Team 6. Team 4 is away to Team 3 but the loser gets another chance (at home to the winner of the Team 5 v Team 6 match).

The Worky game has now become critical. If we lose, we won't play at home again this season.

As it became apparent that both the Dons and Workington were winning fixtures yesterday, the talk at the Match and immediately afterwards turned to where the Dons could finish. There was a suggestion that it could perhaps only be 4th or 6th but although now only a slim chance, it is still possible to finish 5th.

Clearly, 4th would be best. As explained above the two bites at the cherry apply here. Next best would be 5th and although sudden death, at least a home fixture.

The other weekend fixtures of interest show Keighley v Newcastle, and Coventry v Whitehaven.

If Whitehaven beat Coventry they would finish top and be promoted automatically. Should Newcastle beat Keighley, they would finish second should Oldham not beat Hunslet. Oldham have plenty to play for at Hunslet.

Whitehaven, Oldham and Newcastle must be favourites to win next Sunday.

My best guess is:

1) Whitehaven, 2) Oldham, 3) Newcastle.

Should the top three finish as shown and we win at Workington, we would be away to Newcastle in the first play-off game, with a second chance at home to the winner of the Hunslet v Workington game in the next round if we lost the first round match.

Should we lose at Workington, we would be away at Workington in the first play-off game, with no second chance for the loser. The winner would then be away to the loser of the Newcastle v Hunslet match.
