at Championship One level,you are correct concerning the 'friends & acquaintances' plus family of course - at the higher levels as well as CC1 company sponsorship is more interesting - for example to sponsor to a player at TO13 is impossible for the likes of me as there are literally dozens of companies only to willing to put their name against a player - there's a big waiting list.
I don't know what happens in the english leagues nowadays but over here every home score is greeted with the sponsor mention ie :
" Try scored by Clint Greenshields sponsored by Jacques Cousteau company - electricians in Perpignan" etc
One thing about the french,their marketing,even at LER level is really pushed hard
