Allerton Bywater 10 v 28 Moorends Thorne Marauders
Allerton came out of the blocks the quickest forcing the Marauders back onto their own line as early as the 2nd minute. In this early period of play the Marauders found themselves very lucky to not fall behind. Allerton Crossing over the line but the ball deemed to have been spilled.
Good work from the forwards finally gain some much needed field position the ball made its way to Steven Allen who skillfully fed the ball to the winger Pickles into space. The pacey winger making 40 yards before defensive cover arrived who attempted to force him into touch. In the tackle the ball came free but was judged to be a knock on from the Allerton Defence. From the resulting scrum the Marauders found the required position to score the first points of the day through Loose Forward Chris Allen. Receiving the ball 10 yards from the line, Allen managed to successfully fend off 2 willing defenders to stroll over the Line. Conversion missed. 0-4.
Allerton started to stamp their authority onto the game. Moorends were still struggling to find any kind of strong field position through the technically sound defense from Allerton but more disappointing the lack of discipline giving needless penalties away and cheap field position. Moorends were to find themselves fortunate once more as an Allerton player was put into a gap over the try line but once again ruled out for a forward pass.
This luck was not to last long as in the next set of possession Allerton found a huge gap in the middle of defense to go under in the posts with an easy conversion made to give Allerton the lead at 6-4.
On 34 minutes changes were made and it was the introduction of Ernie Lake and Shaun Carver who finally started to give the Marauders the momentum they were looking for. It was the big man Carver who burst onto a wide ball breaking the Allerton defense. His perfect timed pass fed the Supporting Steven Allen on a run who in turn drew in the last Allerton defender to allow Ryan Rafferty to cross over for an excellent Marauders team try. Conversion made 6-10.
Half – Time Allerton Bywater 6 – 10 Moorends Thorne Marauders
In a complete reversal of the first half it was the Marauders who came out firing in the Second half, Ernie Lake making a powerful early run causing damage to the opposition front rowers. From this early momentum it was Craig Hookway who managed to make extremely valuable yards down the blind side which in turn managed to give Chris Allen the space he needed to dance through the Allerton Defence. Unselfishly he drew in the Allerton full back and handed the ball onto brother Steven Allen who went over for the Next Marauders’ try. Conversion Made from Ryan Rafferty to make the Score 6-16.
Moorends were now finally taking control of the game. Hofmann and Bobby Evans were continuously getting over the gain line and they built the platform that allowed Shaun Roberts the room to dummy his way through the Allerton Defence. In an almost identical play to the last try it was now Wayne Rafferty the supporting player which benefited from the perfectly timed time pass from Roberts to go in under the posts. Conversion made from the resulting try to make the score 6-22.
The game now found itself in a scrappy period. Both teams struggling to complete their sets of 6 without any real promise but it was Moorends who found themselves under constants pressure due to silly conceded penalties.
As much as Allerton tried to force their way over the line it was the Maraders defence with held firm marshaled well from the ever vocal full-back Mark Roach. In one quick moment the play turned from defence to attack. Hoffman making a telling break feeding Roberts who handed onto Hookway to go over for the final Marauders try of the day, Ryan Rafferty converting to make the score 6-22.
Allerton did manage one final score as they managed to force their way in for an unconverted try in the corner but that was to the final score of day. Although it wasn’t as polished a display from the team from the previous week the Marauders can be happy with the effort and determination put in from all the players and will be pleased to come away with a valuable 2 away points and sit proudly at the top Pennine League division 1
Final score 10-28.
