Prioritising winning : Sat Sep 07, 2019 10:34 am
I’m increasingly convinced that a major issue for us over the last 8 seasons (excepting 2017), is that winning hasn’t been a high enough priority.

Most other clubs seem more focused on this, either to meet high expectations (the top clubs) or to keep their heads above water (the other strugglers). Is that fair?

We too often seem to worry about doing things the right way, being patient, trying to build something sustainable, enjoying the occasion. Looking at the horizon, and then stumbling over the obstacles directly in front of us. It wouldn’t be so bad if that investment in patience paid dividends a bit more often or we got to enjoy the occasion.

And I think that feeds into players’ perspectives. You might sign for Rovers for money, or a final deal to see you through to retirement or if you’re from Hull or you’re looking more first team opportunities. If you want to win, or even just be part of an organisation that is focused on winning now, I assume you go elsewhere.

Well what you have said does not make sense because in my eyes if you want to play rugby league you must play to win if not don’t play the game

Fair point.

I’m clearly venting after last night’s disappointment despite watching that last try with weird equanimimity.

However, would you agree that there’s a difference between how much the club has focused on first team success during and after the Morgan era? In fairness the club was flying by the seat of its pants more than we maybe realised back then, for all that it was an exhilarating ride, with nothing much else besides a decent first team.

I get the need to build elsewhere, I just feel that somewhere along the line being a bit poop at rugby has become a bit too acceptable from top to bottom.

Agree about the fact that there was nothing underpinning our team of 2009, great team that though, a match for saints current side I believe.

I know we need to build elsewhere bringing back the ( A team that’s what I call it ) is a good start should never have been scrapped but maybe now it’s a to stay and I think we have got some good players with a load of crap players so the good players do not stand out because of the crap players
