Liverpool City RL : Wed Oct 19, 2011 7:56 am
On Saturday 22nd October 2011 all Liverpool based athletes, Rugby League enthusiasts and people who just want to give it ago are invited to take part in a new Adult Rugby League session.
Liverpool has hosted a number of Rugby League teams in the past and present, which have accommodated mainly out of town players. These sessions will give Liverpool people the chance to experience Rugby League in a relaxed and social atmosphere alongside similar ability players. Under the badge of Liverpool City RL and run by Level 2 qualified Rugby League coaches, the session aims to (re)introduce participants to the basic skills and laws of the game in a mix of relaxed and challenging games. Headed up by Ian Balshaw, who has been involved with the successful set up of a number of other Rugby League sessions and clubs, and assisted by local Coach and Chairman of Liverpool Storm – Tom Sumner, Liverpool City RL is a Liverpool Club for Liverpool people. Both Ian and Tom understand the importance of offering opportunities for the local community, something that Tom has delivered at his south Liverpool based community club, “At Liverpool Storm we now have thirty 15 year old lads turning up every week to train and play and they all live within a 10 minute drive of training. We have given them the opportunity to represent their local community instead of travelling to Widnes or St. Helens and we are now being rewarded for this with enthusiasm and loyalty shown through consistent numbers at training.” The first in a run of Liverpool City RL pre-Christmas sessions is taking place on Saturday 22nd October 2011. Ian and Tom plan to meet the participants in the Wavertree Athletics Centre car park, come rain or shine, between 10:45 and 11:00 am before heading on to Wavertree Playground – locally known as “The Mystery” – for 60 to 90 minute session. “These first few sessions are a bit of fun and will give myself an indication of who and how many are interested in playing open age Rugby League in south Liverpool. If the numbers are good, which I don’t doubt they will be, then we plan to hold weekly sessions in the new year with the view to entering a team into the Summer Merit League.” Ian commented. Session 1 takes place on Saturday 22nd October, meet at 10:45 am at Wavertree Athletics Centre Car Park, Wellington Road, Wavertree, Liverpool, L15 4LE.
