York Away : Mon Mar 07, 2016 11:23 pm
A great trip as always. Definitely one of my favourite away games (although not for the results) because York is such a nice place to visit. Difficult to get past the York Tap at the railway station, although this time managed a tour round the brewery. Also got to see the Flying Scotsman at the excellent National Railway Museum which was cool.I had never been to Bootham Crescent before and it was compact but characterful. A proper stadium in fact. Such a shame that a move is planned to what no doubt will be a non entity on a light industrial estate.
Gamewise, given last week and some recent performances against York, a 12-28 loss was not too bad. First try was a thundering drive from Erjon Dollapi. Second try saw Alex Anthony score on the final hooter from an excellent pop up pass from Charlie Lawrence. That was scored when Skolars were down to 12 men after Will Lovell was sent off. I thought Will was having a good game and the decision mystified everyone including the home support. Best bet was that it was for dissent. No one wants to see us descend into the ways of football, but one wonders about priorities when a few minutes later a late high shot with the shoulder did not even get put on report.
Skolars defended pretty well throughout. Only one try where their winger bust through a few tackles did it go missing. There was a good share of possession, but mistakes in our own half did cost and there was a lack of a cutting edge. I am not sure we made any clean breaks.
However, after the disappointment of last week, a competitive performance was a great improvement. Hopefully this will lead to us getting our first league points of the season against Oxford on Saturday.
Many thanks to the Skolars directors for their hospitality at the game as well!
