1895 cup : Mon Nov 12, 2018 7:04 am
In the press it's been suggested the RFL are looking at a Championship and League 1 cup culminating with the final at Wembley , presumably as a curtain raiser to the Challenge Cup final

Now is that instead of these clubs entering the CC ? , if not what's the odds on a Championship club making the semi's If they do it ?

How long if they do will it last remember the plate cup for getting knocked out on the challenge cup trail if memory serves me well was my club hull kr the only club to win it it was before the challenge cup final

Thought the Plate final was a good idea. Gave an opportunity to players to play on the big stage who might never get it.

It'd also help drum up a crowd too nowadays.

I agree, so if this is along those lines it makes sense to me. Of course all teams should enter the Challenge Cup, but realistically a non Super League team is never likely to win it now, so giving players at a lower level a chance to play at Wembley, and adding a few thousand to the gate seems like a good idea.

From the teams currently outside SL, any two from Bradford, Halifax, Fev, Leigh, Widnes and probably a couple of others would easily take 5,000 fans each to watch their team at Wembley regardless of the competition, and the vast majority would stay to watch the big game after so that's potentially an extra 10,000 in attendance.

Obviously not if it's Toronto V Toulouse, but either way it won't be the same teams every year anyway. It's a good idea.

I liked the idea of the plate final, it was for teams knocked out in the first round proper (round 4) but non super league sides, but with the current seeded format don't know how this would work. some people also felt it rewarded mediocrity, and some side may deliberately throw first round games. still think a new cup for the non super league non top 4 championship clubs may be a good idea now the stupid 8's are no more.

I don't think anyone would deliberately throw a game. You could be doing yourself out of a huge game against a big SL team or you might get a tougher opponent in the plate. Notwithstanding the difficulty of throwing a game without it being obvious. Ian Millward could provide tips on team selection.

I know that and you know that, but your average Rl are quite likely to come up with conspiracy theory. and pretty sure thats how i remember the plate being judged in some quarters.
