Fletcher: Course, he sees 'imself as an authority on curry, he does, on account of where he was stationed in the army.
Rudge: Where? India?
Fletcher: No, Bradford.

Nutty as squirrel poo and a real character (which is sadly lacking these days)was Maurice but an RL man through and through. The game is ever so slightly worse off today as that particular light has been extinguished.

Another great character of rugby league has gone. Anyone remember Bamfords Best Bet on radio Leeds?

I remember Bamford’s Best Bet. His first book is a good read and you find out about his times at Leeds. Working with Eric Grothe and the other Aussies. The second stint when he advised the board to go for Crooks and Schofield instead of Jonathan Davies and how someone that remains unnamed undermined him saw him driven out of a job.

There are some really funny tales in there too. He certainly had a sense of humour.

I think I witnessed it - lol
BTW I remember the 18-game unbeaten run in 1983-1984, I wish the current team would do the same.

RIP Maurice and thanks for the memories. My first season ticket was bought for 83/84, went to every game home and away and loved it. I don't think we were a crap team when he took over, we'd topped the table for most of the previous season being hurt by injuries the last third and eventually being overhauled by Hull, but we were struggling at the start of 83/84. Mo arrived at the same time as Dean Bell and it was a true transformation. He produced a Leeds team that was great to watch and gave GB a bit of pride back with some good performances against what was (IMO) the greatest collection of RL players in history.
That moustache alone was legendary.

Yeah he certainly did his bit with GB. The home series we drew with New Zealand in 85 was probably the high point. We’d been stuffed 3-0 in the 84 series and looked miles behind but he picked the right players in the right positions and we played some great rugby. The Lydon try at Headingley and Schofield’s four tries at Wigan stand out.
