For years now I have been critical of our edge defence. For me it seemed to start with Ben Cockayne when he started cutting-in to try and make a 2 man tackle on the opposition centre, which invariably left a walk-in try for his opposite winger and for whatever reason this has continued at Trinity ever since. You don't see this happening in the NRL week-on-week so why do we persist in doing it over here ???
It clearly is a coaching thing, otherwise we wouldn't do it ??
Every single week we get out-flanked and concede tries, so it clearly doesn't work, so why not leave the wingers out on the wing to cover the opposition winger (who, 9 times out of 10 gets the ball and scores anyway) and let the sliding defence cover the players inside ???
It sounds so simple, I know, but surely it has to be worth a try and not give walk-in tries away every week ???

I agree 100% FIL. Spot on. BJB is the biggest culprit. All those in the crowd can see it, so why can't those that matter?

I’ve tried to explain this on numerous occasions, edge defence starts at marker and pressure on the attack ripples from marker out toward the wing as the ball travels through the attack out toward the edges.

The reason edge defence gets caught with 2 or 3 Vs 1 is because defenders on the inside don’t push out as the ball travels out. That then forces the edge defence to jam in trying to kill the overlap before it happens or to position themselves between the opposition winger and centre (no mans land). If the ball bypasses the winger via clever passing then it looks like the edge has failed but most often it’s the middle that caused it.

There are other skills that can help like edges jamming in as a unit or folding as a unit to avoid committing too early but they’re all symptoms of bad, lazy or poor decisions made by the middle.

Chester and Co seem to have zero clue how to coach edge defence - YES but they can’t coach defence - PERIOD!

Bout time they gave someone else a go on that right wing. Lets see if we can blame the other 12 players then.

Thanks for the technical insight Avenger...it makes you wonder whether the Coaches actually watch any other matches to try and work out why we are so poor at edge defence and what needs to be done to rectify the problem, 'cos it sure ain't rocket science !!
Are we taking bets on Eden getting a hat-trick on Friday night ??

A hat-trick is just wishful thinking. He'll probably score 4.

Based on how Castleford played against Leeds, it's going to be a dog fight IMO but regrettably one we're probably not going to be up for...

well for me its an opportunity for the players to dig deep and for the supporters to view the effort and access what should be a 100% improvement . If its not it will show just how committed the players are and they will deserve all the flack they get.

I don't see any kind of improvements in any department. We are not coached and if we are why persist with under performing individuals. Positional changes needed asap.
