BBC Watersplash final : Mon Apr 06, 2020 11:24 am
Just watched this documentary and found it very moving. Had seen the clip of the missed conversion but wasn't aware of the events before or after until now.
Just felt compelled to write how powerful a programme they have produced here. Very fair to both sides and even the ref who gave a hugely contentious penalty try. Wondered how the Leeds and Wakey fans felt on watching that?

I was 16 at the time and at Wembley for the first time amid the horrendous thunderstorms.
Always laugh at the normally immaculate Coldstream Guards breaking their step as their boots disappeared in huge pools of water.
Wakefield fans have long thought the penalty try was very severe especially as 4 men were in contention for the ball and 3 of them were Trinity including Ian Brooke who ran the ball back once it went into the dead ball area. Have watched the replay on Sunday it still seems harsh.
However we cannot turn back time and I enjoyed the friendship of players in the documentary filmed at Sharlston ARLFC.
One of the more vociferous players regarding the penalty try was David Jeanes a Wakefield player at the time of the final who later joined Leeds.
A great watch and such a sadness to realise the impact it had on Don Fox.
Mental health problems are finally becoming more prominent in their recognition and as Neil Fox said he probably would have dealt with the miss better than Don who continued to remain a hero with the Red White and Blue.
RIP Don Fox.....Never Forgotten.

Heartbroken

I was 8 at the time and my dad was there at the game, we both never gave into changing alliance for glory hunting teams and I never will, it was my nearest team to birth and that will stay with me until I go come a what may

The documentary was excellent. The game though was one of the worst games I've ever seen and should never have been played.

With the magnitude of the missed conversion I think the actual vision to do the trick kick off in injury time and the try got overlooked a bit? Only just rewatched the Salford MPG and these things as fans hurt but we as a team had umpteen chances to avoid even being in that game and myriad reasons we went down if honest not just one moment. I found this documentary very good and the old players come across as real gents. My first real Cup final memories are of the Hull Wigan game in 85 I think? Never seen the 1980 game and think i'l have a watch of some 70 and 80s cup finals whilst have spare time

Well clearly you’ve never actually watched it or you don’t understand sport. The conditions were some of the worst I’ve ever seen but the game was compelling. I’ve seen far worse CCup finals than that, the most recent being Leeds destruction of HKR. That game was a game only a diehard Leeds fan could enjoy.

I've seen it many times over the years. The conditions were awful, and the game should never have been played. The game was more farcical than compelling.

Whilst the result was a battering I still enjoyed the cup run .Couple of really good wins then the day out to Wembley.Such a long time since last major final and 12 years in lower league and financial problems and a couple of moments along the way where looked like wouldn't have a club to support? Major Injurie problems and facing a very good Leeds side saying goodbye to some great players it was unlikely we would win but you always travel with hope and we certainly earnt the right to be there. 50 0 i can't defend as a result but as a fan I never thought I would see my team play at Wembley and it was a good day out. Kelly played on one leg and poor old Kieron Dixon had a nightmare game but tried his nuts off.A few senior players never showed on the day and Leeds had a stroll of a game. Agree it was a poor spectacle and like to see a tight final but all in all I think as a team the magnitude of a Wembley final was too much and the team froze badly whilst Leeds just saw it as another big final in a string of big finals. Then relegation followed and promotion back. Quite a lot KR fans have endured in 'recent times tbf
