Just watched the highlights again - fantastic finishes by Ethan Ryan (yet again).

An observation though - the tackle attempt for his 3rd was pretty dangerous. He was tackled in the air and landed pretty awkwardly. Looks like he was tackled in the air for another one of the tries too.

Shouldn’t this be an 8 pt try or am I misunderstanding the rules?

You're misunderstanding the rules. The rule you mean is where a defender is fielding an attacking kick. Here an attacker has got the ball so the defender can't be expected to wait till he touches down before attempting to tackle him.

I agree BTW it did look dodgy and could have been penalised under general foul play.

Penalty kick rule 9 states - If a player fouls an opponent who is touching down for a try, a penalty kick at goal shall be taken from in front of the goal posts after the attempt to convert the try. After his kick has been taken the ball shall be deemed dead and play shall be restarted from the halfway line. This law applies to the period during which the ball is touched down for a try and not to any subsequent period.
So if the referee had deemed Ethan to have been fouled in the act of scoring then the above rule applies. It may well have added up to 8 points.

He wasn't fouled though. You can tackle someone in the air if they are an attacker contesting for a kick. It's the defending player (aka someone trying to diffuse a bomb) that can't be tackled in the air. So the dons defender didn't do anything wrong.

Fair enough if that’s the case. Not exactly clear on RFL website though:

Mid-air tackle 1. (b) It is illegal to tackle an opposing player attempting to field a kick whilst the player is in mid-air. The catcher must have returned to the ground before being tackled.

My understanding was that it was for safety reasons. If so, surely this applies to attacking and defending players?

I think, in the case of scoring a try, it is the scorer who is placing himself in a dangerous position. The defender has to have the right to defend or there is no value in the try.

Throughout the history of the game, defenders have attempted to body check try-scoring wingers "into the stand" near the touchline. It's part of the bravery of the winger to take his chances in the face of that obvious danger. I have to say that the new law, taking the corner post out of the equation, has made made scoring infinitely more dangerous. So much for the authorities and their concern over health and safety.

It’s usually the wingers who take the risk of diving at, over, or through the corner post; one assumes they know the risk. For me, taking the corner post out of equation has added considerably to the entertainment value of our game.

Indeed.

I've no real quibble with the corner-post rule. The players seem to like it and it's created a fair bit of excitement and lets the wingers show off their skills and particularly their bravery, but as recent posts have suggested, it clearly opens up the wingers to be being quite legally, 'tackled in the air'. That being so, I'm far from sure how it fits in with the recent, 'player safety is paramount', dogma coming out of Rot hall.

We now have a strange situation, whereby you can legally, almost literally, deliberately smsh a flying winger 'into the stand' with a three man tackle, but if you accidentally catch a falling player above the shoulder with the back of your hand it's a penalty and maybe yellow card. Personally, I can't square that circle and I wonder how the authorities do. To take that slightly further, I've never yet seen anyone trying to tackle a 'flying winger' being pinged for a high tackle - all things considered and given the desperation of the tacklers, I find it pretty surprising that, in a multiple tackle, no-one has apparently touched the winger's head.
