Whats the Rule? : Sun Jun 16, 2019 1:38 pm
I mailed the RFL on this subject but got no reply so I hope someone knows the answer.....

How many 'doctors, trainers, physios, water carriers are allowed on the field when the ball is in play?

I am getting increasingly frustrated by our side over the large number of non playing staff on the field, and the amount of time they spend on it after they have performed their specific duty.
I got hacked off with Wigan doing this last year.
I think we've taken it to at least that level.

In more than one case it was clearly coaching. (Andrew Henderson take a bow, along with 2 of the other water carriers...)
Often the play is going on and they 're only 5-10 meters behind the line.

Do players really need water 5 minutes into a game?

The coaches have all week to work with the players so if the tactics are wrong the onus should be on the players to self manage or react to the coaches shouting from the side.
I simply can't stand this 'on-the-field' coaching.

I've spotted this a few times in games. It's pathetic. It's like watching an Under 8's side being coached around the pitch, giving them absolutely no opportunity to express themselves. I can't imagine it really helps the players either, they're under pressure to follow that advice but are better placed to judge whether it's the right thing to do or not.

But you are totally right with the rules needing looking at. There are a few coaches in the league who run on with a solitary drinks bottle, which is waved in the direction of a few players but ultimately never leaves their hands. Firstly, I think anyone employed in a coaching role shouldn't be able to enter the field at all, even when play is stopped. That way, all you can do is let your medical staff carry messages, rather than coaches leading the players through the game. Then I'd say drinks can only be brought on when there is a genuine break in play. If this leads to Lee Briers taking a B-Tec in Advanced First Aid then so be it.

Why allow anyone on the field at all? Apart from a physio, of course.

If a player needs some water, there are more than enough breaks in the game to go to the sideline.
