Could they not do that with the heritage number they receive when signing with the club?

There's a massive difference between a players heritages number and their squad number (about 1300 TBF ) in all seriousness, a players heritage number is a fixed number, it will always be that's number, the squad number is a variable and for a first time 1st team player that number will mean a lot

But surely having that specific number would make it more sentimental?

Ah maybe not I don't know, just thought it was another way of looking at it. I have no problem to be honest with each member of the team having a number.

A lower number could also mean that a player is showing improvement and is now a "first choice".
Not important for some of the senior players who will have gone through all of this at the beginning of their career but, for the youngsters, in particular, it must be great to know that they are likely to feature in the starting 13/17
