You are mixing up 2 different rules. The bit you quoted is written for say, being in front of the kicker.

If you carry on down the page that you linked to you will find this section:

“Out of Play” as opposed to “off side” 3. Players who are out of play at a play-the-ball (Section 11), a scrum (Section 12), a kick off or drop-out (Section 8 ) a penalty kick (Section 13) or a free kick (Section 13) are not put “on side” in the manner described in para 3 above. (Seeappropriate Sections).

It's kind of ironic that you have told him to read the rest of rules whilst he's at it but didn't bother doing that yourself.

It wasn't a try, but it didn't matter in the end so I can't get too upset about it. We got lucky with the red card so it's swings and roundabouts.

https://www.rugby-league.com/the_rfl/ru ... me/offside

OFFSIDE
When off side 1. A player is off side except when he is in his own ingoal if the ball touches, is touched, held or kicked, by one of his own team behind him.

Out of Play 2. An off side player shall not take any part in the game or attempt in any way to influence the course of the game. He shall not encroach within ten metres of an opponent who is waiting for the ball and shall immediately retire ten metres from any opponent who first secures possession of the ball.

Placed onside 3. An off side player is placed onside if:

(a) an opponent moves ten metres or more with the ball.

(b) an opponent touches the ball without retaining it.

(c) one of his own team in possession of the ball runs in front of him.

(d) one of his own team kicks or knocks the ball forward and takes up a position in front of him in the field of play.

(e) he retires behind the point where the ball was last touched by one of his own team.

then you best get in touch with the RFL then to rewrite the rules we have one retired ref who state he's offside and two present refs who had went with being played back on side and was deemed to be out of play

Carry on further down the page. If a player is out of play then those scenarios you keep quoting are irrelevant. "Are not put “on side” in the manner described in para 3 above"

Ian Smith has apparently said that players being offside at the play the ball isn't in the video refs remit, which I wasn't aware of but it makes sense as to why the try was given. Thaler obviously missed it (mistakes happen), and the video ref couldn't rule on it.

I got my quotes above from your link to the RFL laws.

I'm sure they could make it more difficult to read if they tried.

He was technically out of play rather than offside which is defined in section 11 and the difference is referred to in the notes at the bottom of the section you quoted- which means it is not reset by our player touching the ball in front of him.

I'm still not sure I fully understand 'downtown' which is also there and Kirmo was pinged for a couple of years ago.

I suggest everyone plays to the St Helens rule book, they never get pulled up for offside for any type of kick.

well the rules above come from the rfl and is clearly within whats in red, are you looking at Crowther being off side at the charge down or mason who was at the side of the play the ball?

Mason was out of play which, as it states further down the rules from you've stated and has been put on here by Coco, supersedes the part you’ve highlighted and means he can’t be put back onside by Crowther. It should have been no try, Thaler got it wrong and for reasons best known to the rule makers the video ref is not allowed to rile on it. One in our favour for once but i’d have been livid if the boot was on the other foot.

What's the fuss ,there is a rule that says you can not throw the ball forward. Your big teams got rid of that rule a long time ago,and have won many matches .on the back of it ..The way you are going on about it, you would think Hull had scored that try in the last minute to win the game .A few years ago Leeds won a Cup S F with 2 trys one a blatant forward pass and the other a blatant knock on bet Leeds fans were not saying those trys should not have been given
