There is a bizarre story of where Bateman came to talk to Johnno, who was surrounded by fans who he was signing autographs for, and he just handed Bateman a piece of paper and said "here's the offer, take it or leave it". Bateman took it and then regretted it soon after.

Allan Bateman was my favourite player growing up, it's bizarre how underrated and shoddily treated he was.

Always enjoyed watching “Batman” and had the impression he would have tackled a Sherman tank (and stop it) if it was in opposition colours.

A lot of players stunk the place out from day one because they were garbage to begin with, Matt Sturm for example. Charnley was a very good winger who has gradually got worse at Wire

Of course it's inevitable, but Charnley is only 29. Saying that Forster started to decline at an earlier age and still managed to get a 2nd testimonial.

Probably down to knee reconstruction (iirc) in the late 80's, which blunted his pace. Possibly, we could've given him a run in the second row. One of the game's biggest wingers, and regularly "took the ball up", in a set of 6, and never shirked work. Imagine his effectiveness, running into a well timed pass from his scrum half.

His resulting 2nd testimonial was down to the club's long standing problem of lack of ruthlessness.

A gradual and continuous loss of strength, numbers, quality, or value. For example, 'Mark Forster's misjudged attempt into conquering the sports retail market failed due to a decline in sales'
