Re: Kris Radlinski Interview : Thu May 27, 2021 9:26 pm
In rugby league it's pretty easy for clubs to stick with the basics behind the scenes and doing nothing of note for decades. There are a couple clubs in Yorkshire that we could point to (still playing out of dilapidated hovels for instance). There's a well known saying in business from Henry Ford "If You Always Do What You’ve Always Done, You’ll Always Get What You’ve Always Got".
I believe that's Rugby League all over.
I also believe that Wigan and a small number of other clubs do think differently. We all know that IL and KR do have Wigan in their hearts and want what's best for the club even if they have to think outside of the box to achieve this.
Some things work for a time:
The Big One campaigns.
The youth policy to have the best Academy in the league.
The annual game with Scholars in London.
Some things didnt.
The Millwall trip.
The Australia trip.
Nobody is perfect, even Radlinski admitted that. With regards to the rebrand he believes in hindsight he perhaps should have asked a few more supporters for feedback (up from twelve) but knew it would have run the risk of letting the cat out of the bag. What he did say was that was Merchandise sales this season were the best since 2011 (iirc).
Some things work, some things dont. It's not my money. But what I am proud of is to be a supporter of a club that not only doesn't just sit back and expect hand outs for years/decades but also continues the drive to lead the way in order to advance the club (and the sport) where it can.
