He used to do it to play on the club rivalry / banter thing to stir up some interest from fans of the club he's in charge of. That's his job, and for a while it kept the fans interested in the far-too often played derby. Playing along with it was part of the plan, obviously. Has it worked? Probably not much. Could we do with a better CEO? Possibly, I guess we'll see what he plans to do going forward.

Ignoring all the banter rubbish, he's done some good things from a matchday experience perspective. Certainly, we've had a much better return on investment than his predecessor from the Lawn Tennis Association gave us.
