If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.

Frederick Douglas

^^THIS^^

I've suffered a number of neck-related problems since, things like shoulder pains, numbness in arm and fingers and restricted mobility and pains in the neck. Usually this can be resolved by reverting to simply sleeping in a soft collar, I use an orthopaedic pillow and when on a long-haul flight, always wear one of those inflatable support pillows. Occasionally I've been referred to physio, including traction, this involved being strapped into a chair with a harness on my head. The harness was linked to a cable and through pulleys to weights, the weights were gradually increased on each session. The traction lasted around 30 minutes per session and although uncomfortable and boring wasn't painful. Any manipulation of the upper vertebrae should be gentle and controlled.

Yes, I've got pins and needles in my arm, hand and fingers. Pain in the upper arm and shoulder that varies from mild to excruciating. The manipulation was a sharp push to each side - which did not hurt but sounded as though my neck was being broken. Traction lying down with harness under the chin. Neck has some improvement in movement already although stiff and maybe more painful than before. Hard to tell. Mrs D's research suggested there are better treatments with less risk. I am due to go again next week. Not sure how long to continue. Was expecting loads of people on here would have had treatments for rugby injuries and could offer their experience.

If I read you right, are you saying the physio was not that helpful?

The older I get, the better I was

Advice is what we seek when we already know the answer - but wish we didn't

I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full-frontal lobotomy

Thanks. Yes, the traction seems OK on the face of it. It's the other procedures I am a bit worried about.

Don't force anything, if you've been given exercises to do then do them regularly and without pushing yourself too hard. The answer lies in your mobility not manipulation

Don't listen to him. Perform your exercises with swift, uncontrolled movements for 6 and a half hours every day.

Physio combined with Acupuncture, stretching and posture exercises plus a Tens machine but you should have a MRI scan first to ascertain, as far as possible, the likely cause of the problem.

NHS physiotherapy is virtually useless in my experience, so you'd need to go private.

Not had an MRI scan. but seems to be a bulging disc plus degeneration / compression of vertebrae. Exercises not yet suggested - but only had one session. Private physio.

As long as it is done privately and is going to make a profit for the medical person/company it will be absolutely brilliant.

This I know to be an ABSOLUTE truth because all you hear is private is best.

Go private dally, don't worry, you KNOW you are in safe hands.....
