It should be pointed out that the accusations re Pay TV in Australia were made by Fairfax press, the direct competitor to News here, and that they have already started to backpedal from their initial attempt to link the newspaper hacking in the UK to the Pay TV award here. Theer was also no hacking involved apparantly.
I think one question ought to be asked as well - how come Britain has such a dreadful, toxic tabloid print media? There is nothing like it at all here - the tabloid stuff lives on supposed 'current affairs' shows on TV (including the imaginatively named "A Current Affair"). The TV shows' popularity suggests that there's an appetite for salacious gossip and the like. So why no printed tabloids here? Why does the UK have such a roll call of tabloid dreadfuls, almost unique in the world - at least in terms of scale of their readership?
