'when my life is over, the thing which will have given me greatest pride is that I was first to plunge into the sea, swimming freely underwater without any connection to the terrestrial world'
Came back from Liverpool last night, never got that far as I was stuck in traffic at J15 for two hours, ended up coming off on the M61 and making my way up to Burnley and then over the top to Otley and A1, god was I knackered when I got home.

J15 M60? Someone climbed over a motorway bridge next to J17 and threatened to jump. He climbed back over a few hours later. Wasn't caught in it myself but believe the M60 was closed, causing absolute mayhem.
There's been plenty of suicides and would-be jumpers in years gone by at J17 due to Prestwich mental health hospital nearby, which is why the footbridge is now caged over. Doesn't stop them using the roundabout or the bridge a little further on where the Metrolink also crosses over, which is where this one was.

Is that what it is? I've often wondered why the footbridge has a cage when it would be just as easy to throw yourself off the A56 roundabout.

I'd say that most people throwing themselves off a bridge need a little bit of time to convince themselves to do it. On the roundabout I think you're never going to get that time, someone will always stop their vehicle to persuade you not to do it. The footbridge won't have many people using it so that's why more people would have jumped off it.
It's obviously easier to have jumped off the roundabout than it is to climb round the cage. But climbing round the cage is a better cry for help than standing at the roundabout and hoping that someone stops.
