watching whinos v welshies. Does the ball have to be touched by the players foot when playing the ball, or is it 'as long as it looks like you've made the effort' its ok

I guess you mean play the ball with the foot?

The refs were keen on it a couple of seasons ago but I have noticed they are not slightly bothered this year, an its rare to see the foot touch the ball these days.

I always believed that it dosnt have to be touched as long as the player makes a genuine motion with the foot and dosnt just step over it. Apparently you can also drop the ball to the ground before playing it if you wish but refs give these as knock ons.

The rules do say that you can drop the ball. As far as making a genuine motion, there are many just step over it.

Taken from the RFL website ( if permitted by the mods ) Play with foot (e) When the ball touches the ground it must be heeled (i.e. backwards) by the tackled player. Every now and again a penalty will be given for an incorrect play the ball, usually to the annoyance of the commentators
