Wakefield and Cas : Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:40 pm
So Wakefield and Cas are top of the Under 18`s league, both clubs will finish in SL top 8. Both areas produce many many players for other pro clubs. Two good community departments and yet there are still people in the media and the game in general who say we should merge, we should share a ground etc etc.

We have each had our own grounds for over 100 years, it hasn`t done any harm to the game. we have a great history. Why do the RL league media and pundits continue to highlight any of pitch negatives they can instead of emphasizing the facts that both clubs play some great rugby and continue to produce some of the best young players in the game.

Rugby League is better with a strong Wakefield and a strong Cas, both clubs have proved the pundits wrong this season. I hope we do not meet in the first week of the play offs, I would like to see Wakey beat Catalans and Cas beat Wigan, then lets see the RL Media and TV pundits talk about the need for us to merge or ground share. Viva La difference.

Merging is one of them things that could go either way, it's bad on the fact you lose 2 clubs with vast histories and tradition, but on the other hand you in essence get 1 top club out of it (St George-Illwarra & Wests), a merged Cas/Wakey side would be a tough team to beat and would have a fantastic youth setup throughout.

But, it wouldn't be worth it because people wouldn't suport the club etc etc, so I don't think either Richard Wright nor Ted Richardson are so stupid to even consider such a thing and the media need to shut up about it, or should Wigan/Saints, Wire/Widnes, FC/KR all merge too because they're close?

Sentiments I feel the majority of both sets of fans will agree with however the reality is that unless either club gets their respective fingers out and starts to actually build a stadium I fear one or both of us will be for the chop.

I don't for one second believe that Cas will get the funding in place in time to save our neck and to be honest I don't think wakey will either.....

However as much as it would get supporters of both teams backs up the only way I see both clubs staying in SL is by jointly funding a shared stadia (which would enable the council to really support both teams)

I would prefer us to maintain the healthly divide between the two clubs and wish wholeheartedly that both clubs manage to produce an independant stadia .... the clock is as they say ticking and some major decisions will have to be made sooner rather than later in order for a brick or bricks to be laid before the franchise deadline is upon us.

My worry is that nothing will get done and one or both sets of supporters will suffer......

Mergers dont think so, too much rivarly, a shared stadium should not be counted out, thoughts from Cas & Wakey fans?
