Would also add Sinny has wielded the axe since has come back and well done. He stated the club was rotten to the core and has acted to rid the deadwood/average.joes. Need to spend big tho now keV.
Totally disagree with the need to spend big comment.
We need to get back to what has been successful and that is home grown players who care about the club, we spent big with Merrin!
What is with the cam Smith love fest. Average at best. Has a lot to prove. No better than sutty and way below Donaldson in every department.
Good job we are using the reserves next season, only way he will get a game.
No love in from me, i agree average but now an opening is there and this us his chance to step up and prove us all wrong, or ship out at end if season,

He will need a fair few injuries as well.
In my opinion
Ward Martin Mellor Donaldson Sutcliffe All in front of him. And if we have that many injuries would rather see Walters given a chance.
He really needs to impress someone as his performances I have seen are lackluster doesn’t look fit doesn’t have the punch for me
We cant be scared to spend big just because we'v had our fingers burnt with Merrin, we spent big on overseas players to complement our golden generation, but even back then...some worked wonderfully, some didnt.
I dont want us to just throw money at anyone, but i dont want us to be gun shy to spend big either. If we'd backed away from big overseas signings after the Clyde and Mullins debacle, we might not of seen Lauititi, Webb or Bai.

We didn’t spend big on those three though did we. Just fantastic players on good money. Comparatively speaking Merrin and Hurrell could be on three times what they were on, because of this stupid marquee signing rule! Are they worth it when you compare to the three you’ve mentioned? The only player in SL who’s worthy of marquee money is SBW (imho). And that’s not just playing ability , it’s the brand, sponsorship, new fans he will bring......
So, if Prior is not linked to Merrin, the that means we still have a marquee O/s spot to use. Personally, I’d like a heavy carrying prop, because with some serious go forward, it would allow us to utilise some more mobile back row, like Ward, Smith and academy graduates etc, rather than replace Merrin like for like with a heavier carrier. Alternatively, should the O/S spot go to a Centre/Wing. I’d say not, but could see the benefit. Go after someone like Boyd if available, make use of Mustapha and Walters was as back row depth, and look for an outside back if we can shed someone like Myler or Sutcliffe.

I always think the money thing is a bit of a red herring. To a point I don't care what individuals get paid. We have to trust the club to spend wisely, be it big or small. The problem has been in recent years that we have had a fairly big squad but made up of lower quality players.
The key as many have said is having a good youth production to complement more senior players who have come through the ranks, some top quality SL players from other clubs and a small number of decent quality quota players. Easier said than done of course.
The problem comes when your youth production isn't producing. Then you have to buy players, they cost more so you end up with a lower quality of squad overall and players who are not bought into the club ethos, they are just bought.

Ofcourse we spent big on them 3, they were world renowned players when we signed them, just because 'marquee' players wernt a thing back then, dosnt mean the top players wernt very well payed.
We certainly have a smaller squad than in the last few years. Still a bit imbalanced though with a lot of backrowers and bare bones for outside backs.
Hard to argue with most of the ins and outs so far given that we can't force contracted players to leave or Merrin to stay.
Yep I agree with that. Definitely have a smaller squad. We have room for a marquee player and at least one other imo. Ideally could have done with Myler going also. Be interesting to see how Myler reacts when he realises hes on the bench or in the reserves most weeks.
