Cooper Vuna : Fri Jul 03, 2009 1:46 pm
Heard we're in the running for him. Hope it's true, but probably means that we won't re-sign Sykes for next season. Mind you, if we were in the running for Wing you'd have thought we'd have heard something by now. Oh well, the rumours keep us excited.

 You could look at it that way. If we don't end up signing another stand-off or retaining Jeffries then we may have to use Sykes there - Tbf he doesn't do a bad job and he will be cheap.

I don't mind Sykes at 6 and still think it's probably his best position, when he isn't half asleep and dropping every pass that comes his way (as he had a spell of at Headingley last week).

As a centre though, he just isn't good enough. In particular, his defence is absolutely terrible. For a team who has the likes of Scott Naylor and Ben Harris at Right Centre, it's so much different to have someone who couldn't tackle a 10 year old.

If Jeffries does leave and no replacement comes though, Sykes is definitely our best option for 6 next year. However a combination of Sykes and Deacon as our first choice half pairing wouldn't exactly have me wetting myself with anticipation.

I agree with all of that. But I am still of firm belief that if we don't recruit a top quality half for next season then we will continue to struggle. I also think it would be best for the club to let Sykes go.

Ins
Glenn Hall
Strike Centre
Quality 6
Quality Hooker (Only if Newton does end up going)

I htink signing a quality 6 on a four year deal would be ideal as when Deacon leaves next season we cuold sign one on a 3yr giving the right time to make a cracking half back pairing.

He is certainly in the Bulls mould of what a winger should be. Perhaps a suitable replacement for a departing Semi?

I'd still like to see us recruit a centre though, but it is difficult seeing us bolster every single weak area in one off season. However if Semi is departing then a powerful and pacey winger would be pretty high up on the urgent list.

Or perhaps not....

Vuna's hopes of a top-grade recall have been put on hold until after he appears in Newcastle Local Court on July 7 to answer allegations that he was caught driving with a suspended licence twice in seven days

Well that's that then. Naughty boys don't get work permits.
